Vertical siting of centre speaker

strapped for cash

Hi all.

My search for a TV stand has proven fruitless for the last year, though I might have found a cabinet that will house all my kit and also works as a piece of furniture.

However, I'd need to position my centre speaker vertically, meaning the tweeter would sit about 10cm lower than it does currently.

I've tried experimenting by positioning the centre speaker vertically, but I have to bring it about 30 cm forward, which itself may affect integration. It sounded subtly different (there seemed greater separation between the front three channels), but I don't know if this would improve with the speaker set further back?

It's a long shot, but does anyone have their centre speaker positioned vertically? If so, do you find it has a detrimental effect on sound, or perhaps even improves things.

The cabinet I'm looking at is expensive, so I want to be sure it suits my needs.

Many thanks.

Cheers David.

I've spent the evening with the speaker sited vertically and to be honest it sounds fine.

Having reached that conclusion, I bought an ex-display (but apparently cosmetically perfect) Blok Classix 3000 cabinet from ebay for £499. It's considerably more than I wanted to spend on a TV cabinet, but it's literally the only one I can find anywhere that will work in my set up and looks nice to boot.

I'm learning you can have style and performance, but it's not cheap. That said, it should be good for years to come; and I'll get over the shock of the outlay, eventually...

Well I think your horizontal MTM center speaker actually sounds better in vertical orientation. Most MTM centers are not optimized for horizontal orientation as they will exhibit off-axis combing filtering / lobing effects. Just till the vertical center upward so that the tweeter points to your ear level should be fine

Thanks for the advice.

Sounds sensible, especially tilting the speaker so the tweeter fires upward towards my seating position.

I'm looking forward to delivery of the cabinet now. No more wires showing, just a nice flush front to the cabinet with the centre speaker hidden away.
