Using a DVD player to listen to audio CDs - Digital coaxial or standard audio cable?

Dear What HiFi

I am upgrading my old cinema system and will be giving my old gear to family.

My dad's old midi hifi just broke (good timing) so I am giving him my AV amp, DVD player and M71s as a simple hifi. He will only be listening to audio CDs.

I was thinking to connect the DVD player to the AV amp using the digital coaxial connection, but will this work? Should I use a standard LR audio cable instead? (DVD player Sony DVP-S725D, AV Amp STR-DB940).

Thanks,

Rich

I'd say probably the DAC in the amp is better than that in the DVD player, so I'd go for the digital connection.

But why not try both and see which sounds best?

Thanks for your responses.

I already have a digital coaxial cable. I was more wondering from an audio quality perspective. In the past I have had mixed responses to this question and thought I would check the WHF forum.

Some said that because audio CD is 2 channel stereo it was best to feed that signal out of the DVD player using the standard LR stereo cable into the AV amp, and then on the amp use the analog direct circuitry (2 channel only).

Thanks,

Rich

Any thoughts? Stereo cables vs Digital Coaxial for listening to Audio CD (from DVD player) from a audio quality perspective?

I am delivering it on Saturday. I have both cables, wondering which to give with the unit (i.e. which I may need to replace myself).

Thanks

The way it works is a good cd player will probably have a better DAC (digital to analogue converter) than a good amp. Therefore you use stereo cables. The cd player converts the digital information from the cd into analogue form and the stereo cables sends it to the amp. If you have an average dvd player it probably won't have a great DAC. This time you use a digital cable (coaxial or optical). This will send the digital information from the cd to the amp which will then convert the information to analogue.

Many thanks.

Based on this I will use the digital coaxial cable. The 940 was a 'QS' receiver and I assume that it will have a better DAC than the (again high end) DVD player.

Thanks

Rich
