Can someone please explain upscaling to me. I think that both my blu ray can upscale. Which is the better one to do the job?

I have a similar question regarding decoding. If both the Blu Ray and amp can decode, which is the better one to do the job?

I am awaiting delivery of the following:

SONY 5400 Amp, Sony 5000 Blu Ray, B&W 684 speaker package, Samsung 46 inch 8000 LED TV.

In addition, B&W recommend the 610 subwoofer for the speaker package. However, he supplier has offer to upgrade me for a nominal fee to the 610XP (shortage of 610 in red cherry). I am unable to listen to the 610XP with the system. Should I be concerned about integration of the sub and the speakers?

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Brandon

You know, you really are going to have to tell us which blu-ray players they are in order for us to answer that question.

In theory there shouldn't be any difference with HD codecs as it's simply unpacking the data (like unzipping a zip file on two different PCs you wouldn't expect either to do the job "better", the end results should be the same). However some people suggest the player, some the amp, again it will (might) depend entirely on which BDP and which amp it is. The only thing to do is try both for yourself and see if you can here a difference.

BJB:Thanks for the response. I did indicate which equipment I would be using further down in my post.

You said "both my blu-ray", which implies you own two blu-ray players;

That's one blu-ray player and an amp, neither of which you actually own yet, however given that the 5000 is almost the same price as the 5400 and the 5400 has a whole lot more components (amps etc), you'd probably expect the upscaling chip in the blu-ray player to be more capable. Indeed the WHF review describes it as one the finest pictures available, so I'd go with that.

That's more for DVDs though, for Blu-Rays it doesn't matter as you aren't upscaling anyway.
