Upgradeing power supply

Anbody explain to me the advantages of useing a better external power supply ,a replacement for a wall transformer.

Been looking round the net and some websites say upgradeing power supply gives better results one inparticular was about a CREEK headphone

Was thinking of gettin a better supply for my Project headphone amp.Anybody messed about with supplies for this amp? if so do u get a better sound, also what spec power supply should i be looking for

Hi Mark. After a recent issue with faulty PSUs for the DACmagic it is worth checking your PSU. One thing you could try is get a PSU which is vented. Heat is an issue and my latest amp has a vented PSU, but the old one does not. I wonder if it would have performed better with a cooler PSU. The vented one does not get so hot. There is an expensive option from Russ Andrews which is vented. Since heat was the issue with the DACmagic, how hot does your PSU get? If it is too hot to touch another one may well be worth it.

The chances of someone on the forum and seeing this thread and having direct experience of upgrading a Project PSU is slim. If anything the forum would look to you to have a go and post back!

One thing I am sure about is that when you say 'what spec power supply should I be looking for' the answer is the same as the one you have got. Some upgraded PSUs will have a slightly output, to give more 'headroom' but I am no expert on the actual specifications and they are just terms I have read.

Also, watch any warranty exclusions. I will have a go at getting an upgraded PSU, but only when my amp is out of warranty. I was going to get one before, but ended up with a new amp instead.

Well, depending on what you buy/make a better power supply should produce less noise, less ripple and possibly more current. It may even provide you an opportunity to upgrade the power cable!

Ok thanks for the replys ,IDC as for power supply it seems to be running pretty cool, but i thought an upgrade might give better results,but i seem to be haveing problems finding a better quality 16v one

Anyway after thinking about it i dont think i will bother just incase i ****** it up ,its only 3 month old

Pj those lessons in building kits are excellent ,was looking at the Graham slee kit myself , i might get that or the Beresford Dac which seems better value again .Incidently what gives better results the Novo or the headpnone amp in the beresford?
