System:-

Marantz Streamer NA7004, Audiolab 8000S, Mission 752's, Rega P1.

Time for an upgrade.

What to do? Start from scratch? Keep the Marantz and upgrade amp and speakers?

£2,000 budget.

Prefer standmount speakers.

Wooden floor + large windows + double height room makes the 752's too much base and booming.

Would like more finesse and agility.

I would recommend focusing on the amp as a starting point. The Audiolab 8000S was decent enough, but agility was something it didn't have. I see little point in changing your Marantz streamer, and your Mission 752s are still excellent speakers that would benefit from an amp capable of asserting more control.

Rega Elex-R, Creek Evolution 50A and Audiolab 8300S would be my audition candidates. After that you can then explore whether there is any mileage in changing the speakers with the remaining £1k budget.

I'd start from positioning of your speakers before you part with any money. Are they close to back/side walls?

Try pulling them out starting with at least 50cm from back wall and see if it improves your bass boom. If you want to go to extreme just stand them in the middle of the room and play some tracks you're having problems with. This should give you an indication if you indeed need to do anything to your system.

davedotco? You are clearly a dealer.

And never for avi.

I do however have a wide selections of wooden spoons.

Seriously though, given the OP's requirements and budget, technically they would be a fine solution. Sadly, as we know, they are hard to get to hear so it would be very difficult for the OP to see whether they are to his taste.

because my room description matches the OP's exactly. So of course you wouldn't want to hear my recommendation would you?!

Seriously some of the cretins on this site really need to change the record over, it became boring a long time ago!

I'm that annoying type, the more you attempt to gag me, the more I pipe up. ;-)

But then maybe not.

The rest of us can get in the popcorn and enjoy the show.

I had a pair of Mission 752's many many years ago powered by Mission 776 preamp and 777 power amp .

The bass was as tight as a nat's proverbial in fact I found them a bit too bass light for my taste

They have a light and bright overall balance with plenty of detail so I would suspect you problem is a combination of weak amplifier and room acoustic problems .

Try and borrow a good quality amp and see if there is any improvement, if not play around with speaker positioning and room treatment or do both if you can .

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your input...so far.

My system sounds great. like now, coming back from the pub and cranking it up.

However I'm looking for gentler and more precise sound the morning after.

Agreed my acousticts are not great in the harsh envoironment of wood and glass in my music room but not yet ready for heavy drapes (curtains).

I need a local dealer who is willing to let me try the recommendations at home. How common is that??
