Most CD's play OK, a few others do not

I have a good old hi-fi CD player by Denon, not used for a few months. In this a few of my CD's now refuse to show how many tracks are present, will not play the first track, but will play second and later tracks. The same CD's play OK on a Philips DAB+/CD player. What should I now do?

You could try cleaning the CD lens with a lens cleaner or if you know how take the cover of and clean the lens.

Clean the discs with a microfibre cloth before looking to the player.

Give one of the affected discs a good clean - if it'll still play on another and not on the Denon, at least you've narrowed it down - you then need to clean it's lens, as advised above.
