I have a good old hi-fi CD player by Denon, not used for a few months. In this a few of my CD's now refuse to show how many tracks are present, will not play the first track, but will play second and later tracks. The same CD's play OK on a Philips DAB+/CD player. What should I now do?
I think it's possible that the laser may have weakened over the years which will lead to the symptoms your CD player is suffering.
If it's a high end player and you can get a new laser, that might be a solution.
Unfortunately though with many old players the lasers are no longer available in which case it might be time to replace it with something else.
If you're going to buy used, do as much research on the internet "reviews" of any models that you see and you can get a pretty good idea of the kind of sound signature that other users have found with a player.
There are some useful discussions of the merits and otherwise of various classic CD players and the same goes for new.
I bought a Meridian G08 MK1 recently.
It's known to be a fantastic sounding player but there were warnings of the horrible quality of the player from some owners.
I wish I'd heeded that warning because the quality is nothing like the older Meridian players.
Mine was problematic, so I sent it back to the seller, who promised to fit a brand new genuine drive unit. Stupidly I trusted this bloke because he lived in a house in Surrey, worth about a million quid, so I expected him to be decent.
When I got the player back, it was marginally better, but outside eBay's return window.
I asked the guy to take it back and refund me, but all I got was a string of insults and abuse.
He really was one of nastiest people I ever dealt with.
The player is now with Mr Tech Guy Ltd and I'm awaiting the news as to whether it's fixable and if it is, how much it's going to cost.
This is an embarrassing episode and probably makes me seem idiotic to some, but it might be helpful to someone who reads it.
