Hello,

I’m looking for suggestions for up dating my current amp and speaker as I think there getting a bit tired. not sure on what it will cost to replace it in today’s money.

my system from the 80s apart from my cd player :

Linn sondek lp12 (mm cartridge)
Cyrus CDi-XR CD
Naim 32 / Hicap / 250
Linn Sara speaker

Hi Matthew,

Will have a look into servicing with Naim. budget around £10000, but i could just use that for the amp and get the speaker another time.

Okay, with a £10k budget I would get yourself to a dealer who knows LP12s and Naim kit well, and who also carries equivalent brands. Cymbiosis, Moorgate and Vickers Hi-Fi spring to mind as people who know what they are talking about and will help to ensure you use your budget for maximum benefit to you. It’s worth travelling if you’re not close.

If it were me, I'd look at getting the Naim amps serviced. They were superb amps in their day and still are now. (I still have my LP12, Ittok, Asaka, NAC42.5 Hicap, NAP140 with Harbeths and you have to go a way to beat it). Amp design hasn't changed massively since the eighties, other than Class D amps and I don't know how much you'd benefit by replacing the Naim.
As suggested earlier. When spending that sort of money, find a good dealer and listen. however you probably know this if you already have a Linn / Naim system.
If it were me, and I had that sort of money to spend, I'd first check with Naim on the servicing and upgrade options as they should know what's possible with your amp. Then do some listening tests, if possible with a serviced equivalent Naim amp, it ,msy be worth servicing yours in advance as i would imaginer a recently serviced NAC32/HiCap/NAP250 would fetch reasonable money. this would give you an idea of whether the money spent on replacing the amp is worthwhile or would be better spent elsewhere.
Let us know what you decide and why, I'd be interested to hear how the listening tests and comparisons go.
P.S. I see Naim have replacements for the NAP250 and that they've commissioned their own Power transistors with improved matching and HF performance for the output and regulator stages. well worth checking them, out I'd say. after all, once a Naimee........
