Uneven bass response...

My current set up consists of Sony STRDA-1200es amp connected to Q-ACOUSTICS 1010 speaker package ( 7.1 configuration ), however the bass levels fluctuate wildly depending where you sit.... The sub is located between front left and centre speaker on an isolation platform ( wooden floors....... i know,.... but it can`t be helped ). I have tried various locations , from corners to half way down the room , but still cannot seem to get nice smooth bass throughout the room. The room is 26ft long and 18ft wide with wooden floors , so I guess standing waves could be the issue...

Will adding a second sub ( Q- acoustics 1000s or similar ) help solve the problem???? should it be set at the same crossover??? at what location will I put it???? Will at the rear of the room be best????.................. Would I be better changing the sub altogether for something with more clout??? ( bearing in mind I can get another 1000s for less than 300 euro...)

Any advice is greatly appreciated

I'm no expert, but no other replies, so hope this helps:

1) As you say - the room. I think one school of thought is the rule of thirds or rule of fifths. ie place the speakers one thrird of the way into the room, or maybe more realistically 1/5! Same for distance to side walls I think. Maybe someone can expand on this...

2) I have not heard your speakers, but I had some nasty Eltax floorstanders once that had the 'one note bass'. Quiet, quiet, quiet, BONG, quiet, BONG, quiet etc!

3) Moving listening position is same as moving speakers - a couple feet might make the difference?

Hope this helps!

It sounds to me like you have the sub in an ideal location, on the plane of the L+R channels, so my guess would be an acoustic problem with your room.

You don't get any improvement from sticking it in a corner or behind a sofa?

Thanks everyone for the advice........ I think an extra sub might be the way to go. Borrowed an active sub from a mate to see if it would solve the issue , and the improvements were dramatic to say the least. Placed it in the opposite corner of the room and fired up the amp. The bass seemed much more cohesive after adjusting phase ( q1000s at o and wharfedale sw150 at 180) , so I better get ordering!!

That is a huge room and I would either sell your subwoofer and get a better, bigger sounding one, or as you seemed to have worked out, add another one. My RSW12 is set to the same receiver as yours at -12db and I have the volume on the sub at half way. There are times when my room sounds like it will explode! However, my room is only 18ft by 12ft.
