Really like all three of these contenders (all 5 star)-however I cannot decide which one to go for.

Would be glad to hear any suggestions/help/advice of why I should buy one partciularly and not the other two.

Thanx

Hi Arj, in a nutshell the Sony is the best 40-42in screen we've tested this year. Why? Well, because it delivers awesome contrast and detail levels, handles motion well and has one of the finest Full HD, LCD pictures we've ever seen.

And it even manages to create the kind of deep, rich, detailed blacks that used only to be possible on the very best plasma TVs. Which is why it's our 2008 TV Product of the Year.

I hate to throw a spanner in the works but after reading the rave reviews on the W4500 series LCD's I thought I would check them out myself and to be honest I was a bit underwhelmed.I had a look at both the 52W4500 and the 40W4500, both reasonably set up.

True, Blu-Ray pictures were most definately the most detailed I have ever seen but SD via Freeview and SkyHD was not particulary great, certainly not as good as the PX80 and blacks also were not as good as expected.

However, the real stumbling block to me was the backlight bleed that both sets had from the bottom corners of the panel.I certainly would not be happy if after paying out a lot of hard earned cash on a top end product, there was such a glaring problem as this.

Personally, I would save yourself a heap load of cash and go for the 42PX80.

Thanks Oy of Mid World, Oy you....

differing opinions are always healthy....and very wlecome.

If the pricing was not an issue-would you still consider the 42PX80 over the others?

Cheers

My advice would be to check them out yourself.Try and find a independant retailer (not Currys or Comet) and try as many sources on them as possible.

It is a difficult question to answer.Blu-Ray looked sooo good on the 4500 but with a 40" panel you really do need to sit close to make the most of the 1080p signal.

If money was no object and I could guarantee a panel with no backlight bleed (do a search, it is a very common problem with the Sony's) I would probably go for the 4500 based on its fantastic Blu-Ray pictures, BUT I would go for the 46" to make the most of the extra detail 1080p gives you.

If SD is important to you, and you watch it more than HD material, I would go for the PX80 and save some money. 42PX80 is only just over £600 now.

Thanks to you all again for your helpful advice. Varied as it is, I am starting to see patterns emerge. However, no one seems to have much of an opnion on the Philips??
