Can anyone suggest a simple and accurate way of checking if the turntable is running at the correct speed. There are lots of sites that allow you to download stobe discs but then you will need a stobe light to determine the correct speed, or am I wrong?

Nope - a lot of the discs are set for 50Hz - the uk mains frequency.

All you will need is a standard tungsten (60w or 100w pearl bulb - the ones being phased out!) lamp, and the dots/lines on the strobe disc will appear to freeze if the speed is correct.

Best to do this at night obv, as daylight will drown out the 50Hz light from the lamp.

If they are moving forward/backward, then the speed is either fast/slow.

fatboyslimfast:Any lamp with a filament bulb will do, just not energy-saving or florescent.

Thanks, that makes it much easier. Just thought I'd mention that on another site I read that you had to use a flourescent light with the stobe disc.

If you have two albums, one CD and the other LP put on the CD and check if the deck is running the same speed by switching between sources.

Thats how i set mine up..
