Hi

I have just bought a new TV which only has one option for connecting external speakers; this is via a single digital s/pdif connection.

I would like to run the sound from the TV through my Marantz pm6004, but all attempts have failed so far.

Can anyone suggest how I might be able to connect the two devices, and what I might need to buy?

Many thanks,

Chris

You need a DAC.

You need a DAC.
Yes you do. What TV is it?

Hi John,

It's a Finlux 40F8073-T
Ok. I'll take a quick look for a manual to check downsampling options (you need to make sure it outputs stereo and not 5.1 pass through), and if it's ok something like this will do the trick: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0038M3ID8?pc_redir=1408036110&robot_redir=1 What sources are you using? Just the internal TV tuner or Sky/Cable and DVD/Bluray?

So long as all the sources are connected to the TV with HDMI, then digital sound from any of them will go through the TV's optical digital output to the DAC. No need to connect them all to a DAC seperately. (Not that you'll find a DAC with that many optical inputs.)

You also avoid any lip-sync issues connecting this way.

Your TV will have a sound menu that allows you to select PCM (for stereo digital audio output) but you might need it to be connected to something (DAC or receiver or whatever) for that menu option to be available.

Anyway, John is finding that for you :)

Yes it does
In which case, you might wish to try a 3.5mm jack to 2xRCA cable. If the headphone output does not vary with the volume of the TV, use the Mrantz volume, if it does, use the TV volume. The Marantz might even have a fixed gain input, I forget.

Thanks John,

I tried that, but it didn't work. I should add that I'm running a humax and AppleTV2. The humax links fine to the amp, but when I use the ATV, I have to go put up with the TV's sound. I thought that by linking the Marantz directly to the TV, I could override both devices.
