The USB sockets on the front of the first and second generation Toshiba players were always 'reserved for future use' by way of such devices as USB game pads (to play online games available via the weblinks in HD-DVD titles). For some reason or other, the relevant firmware upgrade never seemed to address this issue, somewhat disappointingly.
Certainly, some American guys ripped open the first gen player, the A1, and found there's definitely some sort of USB connectivity available on the circuit board. Whether it'll ever be enabled is another matter of course.
Having said that, Tosh support has been good for the legacy machines - eg the introduction of Dolby TrueHD decoding via the onboard decoder was made available in firmware rev 2.0 for the A1 and XA1, so maybe there's hope yet ?
