Tips and tricks to cure pixelization?

I'm currently running a Virgin V+Box-HD into my Sony KDL-40W4500 using a mid-price range QED HDMI lead. Although I'm not surprised, I am a touch disappointed with the pixelization I experience on some of the channels available. I appreciate that many of these channels broadcast older programmes etc, but am I missing something with regards the set-up between these two devices or is this just the penalty of having a TV that will show the flaws in this older material? Any tips or tricks would be very much appreciated...

well the Virgin box is superior to a SKY box. So I can only suggest you swop to a good plasma TV. People say they are "softer" but that's a bonus with mediocre SD channels. I find Sony LCDs can be good with a good SD feed, but unforgiving with with a poor feed.

Have you tried turning all the picture processing off on the tv, like the noise reduction? I have the same tv as you, and a V+ box. I did notice pixelation before, particularly when watching sport. It could be quite bad around the players. But turning off all the picture processing definitely helped. I never noticed any pixelation round the players during the rugby today. Also, you could try getting a mains conditioner, if you don't already have one. I found the Tacima CS929 gave a slight improvement to picture quality.

I presume you're not sitting too close to the tv? That would definitely have an impact on how obvious the pixelation is.

Thanks for the hints and tips chaps. I totally agree that the Sony will be an unforgiving beast with the older material channels like G.O.L.D and Dave carry...

I definitely noticed the pixelization with the football (especially on Setanta) but I will try the picture processing tweak the next time I watch some sport. I was hoping that Virgin would start carrying the Sky Sports HD channels, especially with the impending Ashes series, but suffice to say that the normal Sky Sports channels don't appear to overly suffer with the same issues as other channels I watch.

As for me, due to limitations with the shape of my living room and the postioning of the Aegis 5.1, my armchair is approx 8ft away from the screen - but I always thought that this was far enough away not to be a contributing factor...

You are sitting to close to the set for SD broadcasts, bit you'll be okay for HD. Setanta has very poor picture quality anyway

The age of the content is only part of it. Many channels run at bit-rates too low to give justice to the content. Add to that the fact that only very recently have TV sets with decent upscaling at sensible prices begun to ship.

The common (mis)conception from the providers seems to be that we want QUANTITY of programming rather than QUALITY. By running at a lower bit-rate, they can squeeze more rubbish down the cable.

Not wanting/trying to provoke another cabling spat but also worth ensuring that your power leads are away form your i/o leads could be some interference involved as well.

Thanks again for the tips guys, especially with regards the positioning of
various cabling in and around these two pieces of equipment... I must admit
that I need to see an improvement in images as a result of main cable upgrades
before spending my money. Mind you, I can remember saying the same with regards
other forms of cabling used both on my audio and visual set-up, so perhaps I
should be a little more open to trying it rather than dismissing it... Incidentally... I'd still love to know the optimum distance for my armchair
to be from my TV...

No idea what happened there, perhaps one of the admin team can delete the post?

To repeat, thanks again for the tips guys, especially with regards the positioning of various cabling in and around these two pieces of equipment... I must admit that I need to see an improvement in images as a result of main cable upgrades before spending my money. Mind you, I can remember saying the same with regards other forms of cabling used both on my audio and visual set-up, so perhaps I should be a little more open to trying it rather than dismissing it...

Incidentally... I'd still love to know the optimum distance for my armchair to be from my TV...
