Jeezus....... I can now see why to not bother with secondhand hifi............

Right....

Finally built the Thorens TD160... put on the SME 3009 tone-arm and received the newly repaired (upon getting it the first time there were 'issues') SME cable..... I ran that into my Cambridge A5 (the only thing that I have a phono board in) and put on The Jam......

Low and behold I finally got what it was that set me off on this bloody Odessey in the first place...... sound... from vinyl......

.... through one speaker!!!!!

I switched across the balance control and there was the faintest whisper of sound coming out of the left hand speaker.... but no where what it should be (unless the hearing in my left ear is playing up).

Reasons and suggestions? I am a little exasperated and I have no money for this to be engineered away..... I either fix this one alone or I have some kind of tantrum the like of which I have not had for at least.... well if I am honest probably a week or two..... and go and get my bloody rubbish TEAC Reference 100 system back and ditch this lot of frustrating......er......hi-fi (cannot bring myself to bad mouth it).

All wires connected from arm to cartridge OK? That's the first place to look. Is the repaired work covered by a warranty or other guarantee of workmanship? Take it back and ask the repairer to check his work. Get a second opinion if need be.

Check the basics first though, connections - cartridge - amp. This shouldn't take too long to nail down the culprit.

Unfortunately this is why I gave up on my TD150. I was fed up of fire fighting and decided instead to cut my losses and start back at the bottom with my turntable, with plans to end up with a Rega P3-24.

However, if you have more patience than me (!!), you should persevere because those old Thorens decks sound absolutely wonderful when properly fettled. RS's advice is spot on.

First step is to swap the interconnects over. If the sound now comes from the left, it's a connection problem on the turntable. If it stays on the right it's a problem with the amp.
