Hi all, just joined the forum. I have a 30-year old Thorens TD 160 Mk 11 with a Goldring Elektra cartridge and, due to moving some furniture around, would like to connect it to a Pioneer XC-L7 receiver but the volume is barely audible. Anyone know what's wrong?

I used to enjoy messing around with hi-fi but now I just want to hear my old albums.

Thanks

Hiya, and welcome to the forum.

Are you plugging your turntable into an "aux" and not "phono" input?

If so, and your XC-L7 doesn't have a input marked "phono", you will need to purchase a separate phono stage to go inbetween the Thorens and your Pioneer. This is because the output from a MM cartridge like the Elektra is around 1/200th of that of say a CD player. Most micro and mini systems won't have a phono stage as standard.

These can be bought from around £20, all they way up into the thousands. For what you have, I would suggest that the Vivanco phono preamp from Richer Sounds at £20 should do the job fine.

Hope this helps...
