Used are Marantz 8005, NAD C356 and Exposure 3010S2

The Kef ls50 are horrible bright with no body. Also not warm sounding. Then the Kef R300 are better.

I have listened to:

Tannoy xt6f: fast, exciting  sounding but so bright and where is the bass?

MA Silver 6 and 8: Bright, Bright. I can also name Focal and Dali opticon. The last one too lively highs. Very irritating. Dali opticon 6 also poor bass.

Kef R-series: Had nothing. Boring, flat sound. No bass expect the R300. Good for movies, not for music.

Epos K3: Bad bass and the sounds so steril

Q acoustics 3050: Bass was there, but not good. Also strange thin highes

Dynaudio excite and focus: Can't go on with metal. It's a brand for calm music like classic.

PMC: i miss body.

And i am High Sensitive Person and very sensitive for bright highs.
What amp have you used? Quite a few of the speakers on this list can sound bright with incorrectly partnered amp. But vast majority with the right amp shouldn't. Maybe it's your room contributing in a major way.

What's your furnishing like? Do you have carpets?

what amplifier are you using ? because the Dali opticon 6s has good low down bass but pair the Dali opticon with the wrong amplifier then you will not get the best response out of them .

I've owned the Dali opticon 6s before I upgraded to the opticon 8s so no the opticon range very well and understand what they are capable off and bass is one thing they are very good at .

i am a big heavy metal fan and have been for years so also no the opticon 6 -8s are good for this kind of music and like I've said in older posts you need a very good amplifier to control opticons or any speaker or you will just be disappointed .

I can't stand bright, with no body...and have LS50s, in a large room (along with some Ref 205/2s - so have a high standard to judge them by).

The problem I have, is I don't recognize the way you describe certain speakers. On balance, the way I like my system to sound, is very much how you seem to want. I am not fond of brands like Focal, MA or Triangle and feel that Tannoy need careful matching to stop them sounding a bit "hard" when the volume is turned up.

I'm not sure Nad or Exposure would be the best bet with the R Series (not that these are what you tried).

I have never heard the LS50s sound bright, or the R Series sounding dull....it is subjective, but it is also about partnering equipment, set up and room acoustics. The R Series can sound overly warm and boomy if the amp isn't up to the job; and the LS50s need solid, filled stands and good amplification, or the Bass can suffer.

I agree with all your comments on all these speakers, as well as your comments on Kef LS50's.

Your amplification is not the problem. Exposure 3010 is a good enough amp.

You'd probably like the sound of Bozak Symphonies and Concert Grands (and probably hate the size and looks). Big old JBL's with 15" bass drivers might well be your cup of tea too - sound wise.

What are the best speakers, new or vintage, that you've heard so far for metal?

I'll go through these. This metal-bad-suggest-new-kit topic is so repetitive I might as well listen to some proper metal and get an idea what the fuss is about.

It will certainly be a change of pace from the elegant sophistication of Elgar's Cello Concerto! *music2*

I'll have to find the right mood and blast 4h+ of metal.

I disagree totally about the opticons not just because I've own or owned both sets of speakers the opticons do not lack bass or is the top end to lively .

i went to richer sounds 12 month or longer when I was looking for a new amplifier and cdplayer and tried Arcam A39 and Arcam cdplayer then tried Cambridge top of the range pre and power amplifier And the only speaker they had to hook up with was tannoy revaluation and Dali opticon 6s Which were similar prices so I choose the opticon 6s as they were the closest I had at home which were the opticon 8s which obviously they are bigger and knock out more bass then the 6s do .

i also had taken my own amplifier which then was the abrahamsen 2up amplifier the sales person said at the time why are you trying the opticon 6s as I think the Tannoy's are better speakers I said no the opticon are . Anyway we tried the Arcam and the Cambridge on both sets of speakers just to please the salesperson but the sound was just rubbish on both speakers the sound was dull sounding .

then I hooked up the abrahamsen 2up and hooked up the opticon again the salesperson jaw dropped and said you were right they do sound good And that he was wrong . Why better amplifier not all amplifiers have a happy partnership with every make of speaker . And that story is the gods honest truth

Fine you are happy with your opticon's. But i disagree and i'am not the only one. But that's not important. Important is only that you are happy with them. But there are better for the price.

I have never heard Sonus Faber Venere 2.5. Only suitable for soft sounding music like Dynaudio?

Ok that's your opinion *smile* but think your going to be looking for a long time as it took me years and loads of money down the plug hole to get as close as I can to get the best out of metal, thrash .

did you look at the vintage Yamaha NS-1000m a set selling on eBay £1500 mint for there age or the new Yamaha NS-5000 which has just came out which are very expensive .

i think the higher you go in price in speakers the more neutral sounding they will be but you want to be looking at speakers with larger bass driver units and large cabinet size as by the sound of it you want impact and slam and hearing the symbols crashes clearly big soundstage .

Yamaha NS-1000M's are OK. I think they're a great compromise between size and sound quality. But for metal we can do better for less money. Trouble is, that means going up in size - by a lot - as Blacksabbath25 has quite rightly pointed out.

If Peterpan doesn't want to go that large, he's snookered. He'll have to put up with speakers that don't deliver the sound that he's after.

...and we still don't know which speakers, new or vintage, of all the ones he's heard so far have sounded the best?

What amplifier are you using now in your current setup and what speakers and what size room do you have .

and what do you not like about the sound you currently have at the moment what's missing

what do you use as media cds , vinyl , streaming

The Twenty 23's I had were baby floor standers (within the range) and with this genre generally didn't overly impress me. But I also agree with Blacksabbath, pairing with the right amp is key. My amplification I always felt was always short of the mark. I preferred my GB1i's with same amps though. Big seems to be best it seems from this thread. Although I also think perhaps some people will never be entirely happy and compromise is perhaps needed or it will get bloody expensive or very big and second hand. ;-)

I don't know how about Sonus Faber Venere. I think this will be too soft for metal. Never heard from someone who plays metal on Sonus Faber.

The Tannoy XT8f must be better than the XT6f. More body and sounds warmer. But again many reports that this speaker also sounds very bright. A dealer said this speaker must be paired with a warm sounding amp like NAD C356/375. If it was not so bright and unforgiven perfect speaker for metal.

I think for me the best is a (very) old B&W. The current B&W's are horrible for me. That tweeter hurt my ears.

Klipsch RF-7 mk II and you can't go wrong if paired with something like a NAD C375BEE. Ten inch woofers, plenty of pwer for rock and roll. And used in the studio too by very famous bands.

Different sound then absolutely good for generally speakng hard rock and roll and blues Tannoy XF 8T paired with a Roksan K3. Not bright at all and very infectuos sound. Be warned you need 8T and not 6T becouse of the bigger woofers with bigger, deeper sound.

ps: metal is often monitored at the desk in the studio with Genelec active speakers.

Ha, maybe that's why it sounds rather splended on actives with a sub or two. ;-)

... and wasting a lot of time and effort. How about getting the speakers and amp that physically/spec wise are good for metal. Fast, capable of clean bass, low distortion, etc. you get the idea.

Then all you need is some EQ or simply a DSP solution and it really won't matter how bright the speakers are. You can have them as warm as you like but physically they will be able to deliver what you want.

This thread has got me curious about new metal. I just discovered I can get Scuzz on non-freesat mode on my freesat box. Some of the music I quite like but some is a bit too over the top for me. *shok*

I just don't get this thread...manufacturers just do not make speakers to deal with heavy metal music.get real and just buy a set of fu#in speakers.I love all genres of music...but did I say....I just can't get a good speaker for every type of music..no......heavy metal encompasses all types of music within it's genre.....classical,blues,jazz,...rock....yes..heavy metal fans, the music you love is actually a sub genre of every other type of music.I think it's probably more to do with the recordings, rather than the speakers..also you'll need more than a nad amp To truly get the true potential of a good decent pair of speakers.
