That'll be in January won't it? I have a feeling I'm on holiday then.

I'm not sure whether that means you'll be spending more time on the forum, or less. Either way, you're under no obligation to read my posts on Mulholland Drive.

I will, though whether I understand them is debatable.

This is of course a comment on my intelligence, not yours.

Yes I've seen Holy Motors. Excellent, but very, very strange. Probably worth a few viewings, although I only got one. Beautiful looking film as well. Let us know what you think when you've seen it.

Meaning is subjective isn't it.

I've had two films recommended to me by a friend of mine.

La Grande Bellezza http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2358891/?ref_=nv_sr_2

and Holy Motors http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2076220/reviews?ref_=tt_ov_rt

Have you seen them?

I think Ben's seen Holy Motors.

I haven't seen either. To be honest, if a film's been released in the last few years, you can be pretty confident that I haven't seen it. It's embarrassing, really.

Sorry, I never got round to responding to your specialism (I wanted to mention I'd seen Five Easy Pieces recently) but does it not cover contemporary 'Hollywood' releases?

I'm not planning on writing anything impenetrable; though the more detailed the analysis becomes, the more rewarding discussion should be.

Inpenet....ra...what?

That depends on your perspective. For some writers the term "New Hollywood" refers only to the period between 1968 and 1976. For others it refers to all Hollywood filmmaking after 1976. For others still it refers to both periods. Then there are terms like "New New Hollywood" (the repetition isn't a mistake). It can all get rather complicated.

Most of my work discusses recent history; though as I say, I really focus on industry structure and practice, rather than films.

Holy Motors fits none of these definitions (Though it's a film I should get round to watching out of general interest.)

I'm done teasing Strapped (for now). ;)

I'm not sure when I'll get round to watching it, but my friend described pretty much as you did, so I will have to give it a go at some point.

Sometimes I think about the wealth of films out there, and I wonder if I'll ever get to see even a small percentage of them during my lifetime, which is another reason why films like Gravity annoy me so much, as that time could've been spent watching something good.

I'll get back to you on Holy Motors.

I've met a few people in my time that make Joey Essex look like Nietzsche.

And on that note, I'm signing off. I got stuff to do...

Brilliant!

Who the f*ck is Nietzsche?

I wasn't referring to Holy Motors, rather the fact that you say you've seen very few releases from the last few years, which would cover mainstream US studio releases. But yes, you should still see Holy Motors! And Killer Joe.

Unfortunately with every passing week the percentage of films you'll have seen can only go down! I know what you mean about films that feel like a waste of an opportunity though. Still, a film that's part of the cultural zeitgeist is usually worth seeing. Unless it's Sex in the City. Or The Hangover.

My recent explorations have told me that I won't necessarily find films to be good that everyone else seems to think are good. Doesn't stop it from being worthwhile watching them though, at least you're able to make your own mind up. Unfortunately it sounds like longer term Gravity will fall into the same category as Avatar as a ground-breaking technical achievement but not much of a film.

Gravity was a much better film than Avatar.

While Gravity didn't leave a lasting impression on me, it was an engaging watch. I never felt bored. More importantly, I didn't want to spoon my brain onto the cinema floor, which is a pretty accurate summary how I felt watching Avatar.

Finding the time is my biggest problem. I tend to watch things that are related to something I'm researching or teaching. Anything beyond that is a luxury.

Looks like we'll have all seen 13 Tzameti by the end of the weekend. Looking forward to the discussion on this one.

My job involves a lot of reading and some people who do it say they can't read fiction for pleasure as a result. Does your professional interest affect your personal enjoyment of films in any way?

I haven't watched it yet but that seems like a plausible timetable.

Reem. :)
