I am looking at the new little Denon as a strong candidate for my bedroom system. Its biggest attraction to me is its digital ipod capability. So, some questions to his end:

- will it take digital out from 2nd gen ipod touch via an old apple ipod dock (as opposed to direct cable connection)?

- will it do the same with an old 3rg gen ipod?

- will it take digital out from a 3rd gen ipod directly (without the old doc)?.

- will it play any file from ipod (mp3 up to 320kbps, aac up to 320kbps, Apple Lossless 16/44, 24/96)?

- is it available without speakers?

Would anybody know that?

Might not be much help as I don't have an ipod. I can tell you though that the USB port on the 37 is only geared up to recognise mp3 files up to 320, and wma files up to 192. The brief specs I've seen for the DM38 on the Denon site suggest that this spec hasn't changed on the new model.

Looks like the Denon speakers for it (if sold as a package) are the same ones as before. Pretty well all the hifi retailers were selling the 37 without speakers. So hopefully that will be same for the 38. Don't think you could buy it without the denon speakers from the high street stores though i.e. John Lewis, Currys. So best use Richer, Sevenoaks, Superfi etc.

It will be available without any speakers.

I have a fairly detailed PDF of the DM38, but it doesn't mention compatibility wth older iPods. I can't see there being any compatibility problems, but I'd shoot off an e-mail to Denon technical to answer those questions if you want definitive answers.

My experience with Denon technical is that they were nigh on useless with my queries on my RCD-M37.

When I enquired about connecting a head phone amp and the best way to go as it has no tape loop, they could only say it "should" work through the tape out. Ask about the line out output? There best "guess" was 2mv. Great little amp, just a shame they don't seem to know very much about it.

Thanks, gents.

I fired a request to Denon UK with the questions and got a reply. I am not sure i should post it as it was not indended for that, but basically it was along the lines of ... as the Denon is certifed to work with ipod it shoudl be capable of taking and treating correctly whatever output the ipod is capable of giving, and if a dock passes it through will be ok as well.

Well, this did not answer any of my questions directly , so probably have to try somewhere myself. I somehow doubt that it will take 24/96 ALAC at full spec (who knows, maybe?). Not that it is expected to but I would prefer to know for sure. I do have some hi-rez tracks so just do not wnat to have to select what to send to the Dendon if I get it.

The DM38 is now available
