Just come back from a day at my cousins who has an lX83 and apex. Setup good its an excellent combination and am i am very fussy.

But like everything you need to have it setup right and that takes a lot of knowledge, time and other tech such as bass management. If you heard this system you would be very surprised most people don't know what their doing and day the combo doesnt work - their very very very wrong

That it why I said previously, you need to tweak the MCACC settings.

This really is the same for all auto setup systems, they are a guide and not the ultimate configuration.

I promise you I have tweaked soooo much with it, mainly reducing the 4k and 8k frequncies, but I just can't get it sounding 'right'. Maybe my ears are just particularly susceptible to sibilence. However I am very interested in hearing the latest Pioneers, maybe they're better. Shame becuase I actually love the look of them and the functionality. I think they're hard to beat in those areas.

Turn Eq Off - Turn standing wave off, turn full band phase off.

Get your sub and speakers setup right and its off you go - if its not sounding good to you its not the amps fault - I sold my LX83 before I heard it sound its best, I have now heard it sound really fantastic

Scibilance is there to a certain degree - but its largely caused by noise generated from various sources and other things - and there are ways to reduce it - trying to reduce it with eqing is not the way and xcurve makes it worse.

Hello guys first post here. I've been thinking about buying an Apex setup for some time now. I'm thinking three A40s up front and two A10 for the back. No sub starting out that will come later. Problem is I have an older Yamaha RX-V1900 amp and I'm not sure if it will do the apex's justice. The specs have it at 125W per channel at 8ohms but I don't know if that's enough or if that's even what I can hope to get in real-life.

I used this amp for years with a Dali Suite 2.8 but those are 4ohms speakers. Same sensitivity though, 90dB. The A10, incidentely, is rated at 87dB sensitivity whereas the A40 is 90dB. I find this strange.

Hi guys, I am newbie here and I would appreciate some help. I'd like to get a couple of Apex A10's cause they fit to the easthetics of my space and they also are great performers from what I'm reading. I will mainly use them for music and at some point I might get a sub as well but that's it, I not intenting to build a 5.1 system. I will use them for movies as well but as I said this won't be their primary use. My question is about the receiver. I don't have enough budget and I'm looking for value for money solutions. Do you think a marantz NR-1504 will be enough to power them? I'm not going to listen at high volumes since I live in a flat, so my requirements are not that high. At my local store the sales guy told me that these are power hungry and that I need more watts to get them sound properly. Is that true? Would a Denon x-2000 be a better alternative since it has more power? If I stretch the budget to the SR-5007 would it make a difference given that I will listen stereo and at low/medium volumes. Thanks!

I have 3 x A40s and KEF T301 surrounds which I have been running off my trusty Yamaha RXV 2700 with great success!

The Yamaha will be fine, connect up, listen and enjoy...................................as and when you can upgrade, but really I wouldn't stress, these are fabulous sounding speakers.

Good choice. Three A40's up front will be great. The Yamaha will work, but won't do Apex full justice, no. Not a problem though if in the future you plan on upgrading electronics the Apex will show you more what they are capable of. I have found that a really good power amp makes all the difference! It's not just about wattage though.

The bigger A40 have a higher sensitivity gain (90db) simply due to the different construction and added midrange driver. It will therefor play "louder" than the A10 at the same volume setting so it is important to adjust this in the receiver settings. In my case, the A40 center channel is set -4db lower than the A10's front/back in order to find proper balance. In your case your entire front of A40's will play louder than the A10's at the rear so make sure you find that balance.

I've had my speakers for quite a while now and are very, very pleased with the performance watching movies. Music is really great too .. I tend to favour a heavier style of metal music, and if anything, I'd say the punch of the bass drum hitting you in the stomach isn't quite there yet (perhaps because it's not intended to be with a better quality speaker .. but still I miss it a little on occasion).

I have the sub crossover at 80hz, speakers at small and use my PC over HDM as source with a PCM signal. I'm thinking of playing around with different crossover profiles for different types of music to see if that alleviates my urges a bit :)

Yes, I have now upgraded to an Emotiva UMC 200 pre/pro and an XPA 5 power amp as separates to drive my Apex A40 LCRs and KEF T301 surrounds, distinct and definite upgrade in terms of soundstage, depth and detail.

It has taken me a couple or three weeks to get something like the best out of the combination, however I am just about there and delighted with the performance

An added bonus is the improved processing for LR and Surround effects, staggeringly good, heartily recommend a pre/power set up if you can.

Agreed. A proper pre/power combo will truly push the performance level of Apex. Glad you are happy with your Emotiva set. As great as an integrated solution can be they are simply no match for high quality separates. When I recently switched to a separates duo from NuForce (see my signature) I was yet again taken by what Apex were able to achieve in my relatively small room. Then again the poweramp alone cost twice that of the entire Apex sytem so it should perform. And it does! What impress the most every time I throw in a Blu-ray is the incredible transparency and gigantic size of the soundstage (still, only 5.2). The speakers 'disappear' and I'm totally hooked!

I'm not an APEX owner (yet), so sorry to invade :)

I am wondering though if anybody ever tried combining the Apex A40 with a set of silver RX6s. I love the look of the A40 and the RXC is just too big for our setup (so my gf told me). However, I also love the RX6s and just prefer floorstanders (plus I can get them for a very good price now).
But will it sound good? It's the same brand, same technology... what do you think? Has anybody ever auditioned both speakers? Do they sound similar?

(and of course I know 5 identical speakers is the best and preferrably you shouldn't mix and match, but that's just not always possible :) )

Hi Stefan428

One of the qualities of Apex speakers is their excellent versatility in that they integrate very well with other ranges of Monitor Audio speakers. I've successfully mixed A10's and A40's with Platinium, Gold GX, Shadow, Silver RX, Bronze BX, Gold GS and even the new Silver Series of speakers.

All the best

I ordered today a pair in piano white and look forward to receive them! I'm still contemplating about the AVR though. Any suggestions anyone?

That's it, count me in! Ordered 8 apex 10's to go around my listening room, with a Silver MA sub. V. excited. I have told my wife its a Chritmas present to her with love - She's not entirely convinced!

Trying to work out how the brackets work with the cable going through the centre of the wall pate into the speaker. How do they actually connect to the speaker as the bracket appears to connect straight into the back of the speaker?? or is this photo without the cables installed??

That's it, count me in! Ordered 8 apex 10's to go around my listening room, with a Silver MA sub. V. excited. I have told my wife its a Chritmas present to her with love - She's not entirely convinced!

Trying to work out how the brackets work with the cable going through the centre of the wall pate into the speaker. How do they actually connect to the speaker as the bracket appears to connect straight into the back of the speaker?? or is this photo without the cables installed??

Without cables, the sockets are just above the bracket arm.

No one ever shows cables attached, how would the room photos look when speakers are in the middle of the floor.

I've got a 5.1 Apex setup but want to move to 7.1. I currently have A40 for left, centre and right and A10 for the two rears. So the question is whether to get two more A40 or two more A10? If I went the A40 route that means two of them being used as surround channels which might be considered overkill. Having said that I much prefer the A40 speaker and they are in budget. Any thoughts?

Well, after 3 auditions at my local Seveoaks stores with my exact setup (3xA10's + 2xRadius HD90's + the pioneer) and concluded, that to my ears at least, the Yamaha RX-A1030 is hands down better than my now old Pioneer Sc-LX72. Because I watch mostly TV, the dialogue quality is the most important thing to me and I think the Yamaha sounds so much more natural. Voices sound much bigger now too and less restrained AND that dreaded sibilence has GONE!!. I also think the surround DSP's are pretty cool (particularly like 'spectacle'). The surround field also feels more enveloping. Also with 2ch music it sounds much more "hi-fi" than before withmore detail and dynamics.

The only area where the Pioneer is better is the subwoofer. I think the phase control function on the Pioneer was absolutely brilliant and am missing it a bit, but this is a relatively small negative compared to the massive benefits I get in almost every other area. I think the GUI is very intuitive and has useful features such as NOT cutting off the source sound while making adjustments to the 7 band fully parametric eq.

I have also experimented with adding presence speakers. The Yamaha uses these to produce some '3d dsp effects' but more crucially also allows you to use the dialogue lift function which rather convincingly gives the impression of the centre channel being behind rather than under then screen. What I discovered is that its vital the presence speakers tonally match the centre and front speakers. For example I tried it with some shitty Sonys and it sounded very artificial and distracting. I then tried it with some Radius' I borrowed and it made all the difference, it sounds great and will be purchasing some :)

Though the bigger A40 is somewhat more capable than the smaller A10, since you're already using a pair of A10 for surround I would stick to the same model to handle surround duties and simply keep the A40 up front. OR, you could always replace your A10 and upgrade to A40 all round.

;)

For the record, I'm not sure in this league there is such a thing as "overkill". I mean, I'm using 6K worth of a/v separates to drive a speakersystem costing half as much. That way I'm set for future upgrades.

I have found you get a lot for your money with Monitor Audio - sure other speakers are the same - you can feed them too good a signal quality.

How did the room acoustics go in the end RickyDeg? - I have not seen any info on it?

Hey you! I have found the same about MA, so even Apex will reward with higher quality signals feeding them, for sure. However, I have been keeping eyes on an upgrade - Ken Kreisel Q-series.

My acoustic treatment project have not yet been ordered and installed  Due to adjustments in my livingroom I need to wait a while, which sucks cause I been so excited about it. Nothing I can do at the moment. Still dead set on it though and will create a thread with before/after impressions with pix.

Still loving your GX / Meridian combo? Wish I could pop by for a listen! ;)

My system has gone up about 5 notches with lots of work/investment on the audio PC, the inclusion of a Bryston power amp I have wanted for years and some more acoustic treatment.

as always it's the acoustic treatment that has by the miles the best effect for the money. But I am so happy I have built my audio pc. It's a tweakers dream and the sound is crazy good compared to what you can buy at anywhere near similar money.

still always more to go though but each step the GX get better. I really want GX for rears now it would work better than the apex I am using despite how good they are.

i would love for you to have a listen - before you buy your panels speak to GIK they are awesome panels and advice

Yeah I'm unsure what direction to take and whether to get floorstanders instead for front duties. Currently I have 3 A40 at the front and 2 A10 for surround. There are two options to move to 7.1:

1. Buy a pair of florstanders such as the Silver Series 8 or 10 and use them for fronts and drop the A10 to surround back. That would keep an A40 as the centre and move two A40s to surrounds.

2. Buy another set of A40 and then drop the A10 to surround back. That way I'd have A40 for the five main speakers.

Option 2 is roughly half the price of 1. Movie is more important than music for me. The A40 do seem capable enough for music to me but I'm always worried that I'm missing the "real" movie and music effect by not having large front speakers.

I think buying floorstanders is a mistakw - keep the speakers the same dont mix and match.

Get the sub integrated and phased properly and you will miss nothing - all a40s is the way to go i think

Its an an interesting view and others have said the same to me. But yet others have said you really need floorstanders to get maximum effect as a matter of physics if nothing else. The driver technology between the apex A40 and silver series is similar as well. I'll have to think further.
