As I said earlier, if you replace the entire system you're (she's) still going to have the problem of accomodating decent speakers. So I'd suggest trying something small like the AE Compact 1 or Q-Acoustics 2020i & see how they fare with the Technics first. I'm sure you could secure a home demo from one of your pet dealers.
