True Blue:Nah, same logic used as those who say mains cables cant make a difference that have never tried them.

Maybe you should use the mains cable on the end of a wet finger, Tesco, QED, Naim you'll still get the same result!

;-)

maxflinn: why could a tesco cable not be as good as any other cable ?? all cables are made on production lines , by machines , using the same basic materials ...

Same can be said for coleslaw. Better ingredients better taste.

Indeed they are both cars, four wheels get you from a to b.................

Last word on this one, unfortunatley for me and my wallet I have decent eyesight and can tell the difference between cheap cables and expensive cables so that is what I will buy, not for kudos but because in my eyes they look better.

If you are happy with the cheaper ones then good for you and your wallet.

Not all carrots taste the same, or cabbage or onions etc etc, what makes a good meal great? fantastic ingredients. For this reason top Chefs will scour the country for a particular type of produce, for the taste. Taste is subjective, i cannot tell you you cant taste something the same way you cannot tell me that to my eyes a £10 HDMI from tesco looks as good as a Chord Active HDMI

I don't buy anything from Tesco if I can possibly avoid it, a very nasty culture presides...

And as for buying AV equipment from there...I wouldn't buy a kettle from Tesco.

tesco is just a retailer , they dont actually make anything that they sell , a bar of cadburys chocolate bought from tesco would taste the same as one bought from selfridges ..

a £10 hdmi cable sold by tesco , is no different to a £50 one sold by richer sounds , if they are the same cable ...

Don't mess with WHF 'it's the bible' well it is since the demise of Hi-Fi News & Record Review, now that was a good read, they would probably be able to tell you how to make your own.

No offence WHF, our your readers (I'm one, like the occasional comic now and again) but people really do get hung up on expensive equals best.

If it wasn't for the mainstream we wouldn't get cheaper BD players or discs now would we. Oh sorry, they don't care because they can afford it. They'll be telling us next not to buy that blu-ray disc because it sounds inferior to the one next to it.

Why do people knock Which? They are an independent organisation who perform both subjective and technical tests which most magazines do not.

We buy many things based on their tests and have yet to be disappointed. I'm more inclined to trust their findings than not, though it is true in this case I bought an expensive HDMI cable that seems pretty good to me.

Ive found some of the results of their 'tests' (particularly to do with computers) to be absolute garbage

Some of their reviews have also made it clear in some cases that they dont have a clue what theyre talking about

Personally, I wouldnt trust them to make me a brew

On a related theme, I use Audioquest Copperhead interconnects between my CDP and amp (Marantz SA7001-KI and Sansui AU-717). This cable costs about £60 here's what it looks like:-

copperhead.JPG

Last weekend, I popped into a computer shop in Edinburgh and saw an RCA phono cable branded as "AV Gear", 2m long, and it looks like this:-

http://www.computergear.co.uk/send_binary_p4p.asp?Path=prodimage2027.gif&Width=300&Interpolation=1&sharpen=0&sharpenvalue=&Rotate=0[img]

and here's the spec for this cable:-

"Cable Specifications
Inner conductor: Bare copper 10 x 0.1mm (x1)
Insulation: PE ID = 3.0mm (x1)
Shield 1: Aluminium polyester foil (x1)
Shield 2: Bare copper spiral shield 32 x 0.10mm (x1)
Jacket: PVC OD = 6.0 x 12.0mm
Connector: Gold plated
Colour: Blue"

This cable costs £6.95 (or it did in the shop). I swapped this one in for the Audioquest. There is no difference. None. Not one audible trait changes. This costs £7, the AQ around £60-65 depending on where you buy. There's no deterioration in the sound quality; no less "air", "pace", "rhythm", or anything else.

So, either the guys at AV are massively underpricing their cable, they're optimising the price on the back of bulk sales to the technology sector rather than the mug's game that is the audio one, or Audioquest have chanced their arm.

Have you ever compared a freebie cable to 'higher end' cable!

Yes. I have four HDMI cables, two free (Humax, Oppo (although this is a "quality" cable) an Ixos and a 5* Chord. I spent a few hours trying all combinations desperately trying to justify the premium I paid for the Chord, but I could not see (on a 5090) or hear any difference whatsoever.

maxflinn:no , cant say i have ... Well then,i suggest you take your own advice!

maxflinn: i trust you guys have tried them for yourselves ??

Because,if you had.

maxflinn:slightly different external design , colours , Then you'd know there's more to it than that!

If you compare a cheap/freebie cable to something more exotic, in terms of build quality/quality of materials used at least, the differences are more than "slight". They're vast.
