Once upon a time a surround amp had lower powered surround channels and the front three had the same, now all amps have 7 channels at the same power, but does this need to be the case?

I have my front three channels at 100W (stereo biamped 2*100W) surround at 50W and rears at 85W.

Due to the reduced bass available from the surround channels I have not noticed any loss in quaility in films.

Why do we need 220W to all 7 channels in the Onkyo TX-NR905?

Probably not. Depends on the speakers employed. In most setups the rears will require less power.

Besides, 7 identical numbers sure look pretty don't they? This discussion is pretty pointless since those specifications are marketing blurp anyhow. An Onkyo NR905 (or almost any other multichannel amp) will actually output 7x220W simultaneously when pigs fly.
