Yes, 2001 is a proper classic. Also - Aliens, Event Horizon, Terminator 2, I-Robot, War of the Worlds. All great with a big surround system.

I would recommend Tarkovsky's Stalker (should still be in print) it won't give your subwoofer much of a work out but it is a very fine film.

Prseuming you've seen most recent stuff like War of the Worlds, Pitch Black,Event Horizon, Sphere, etc.

Oldies:The Thing From Another World, Them, The Day The Earth Caught Fire, Forbidden Planet, the tv version of Quatermass and the Pit, Village of the Damned,It Came From Outer Space, Invaders From Mars,Earth Versus the Flying Saucers, and most of the stuff already mentioned. Oh, and the first two versions of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers.

Slightly more recent: Contact, 2010 (better than it seemed at the time), Alien 3 (ditto).

I agree Alien V Predator are just dreadful and a stake through the heart of the Alien franchise (finishing the job that Alien Resurrection began), so if you like those you might not like much on my list.

Seven replies and no one's mentioned Blade Runner? For shame...

It looks better than ever on Blu-ray, and the Director's Cut makes a lot more sense than the original theatrical release.

VoodooDoctor:^^ Of all the films to recommend!!!??? The Aliens Vs Predator films are some of the worst sci-fi movies I have ever seen!

So who did you think would come out tops? Edge of the seat stuff! I also thoroughly enjoyed......................

This is one of those questions that's difficult to answer without knowing what the OP has already seen but one of my favourite's, although not for a lot of people, is The Fifth Element. Classic Besson, great styling from Jean-Paul Gaultier, a wonderfully over the top performance from Gary Oldman and the opening scene with the ship landing will test your sub thoroughly!

Yes sorry i should have stated what i watched and own, but would take up alot of space, Generally seen or own all the popular common ones, such as Aliens, Fifth Element,Thing etc. Looking for some obscure titles that are in the Alien, spacey mode, like Enemymine, Aliens, Starship troopers as well as some good zombie movies.

The Fifth Element is in my top 5 favourite movies. It gets slated by virtually everyone, but I think it's great. What's not to like? Humour, action, and a naked Milla Jovovich!!

;-)

Agree with Event Horizon, Alien, Aliens, Blade Runner, Star Wars, I Robot, Matrix. etc.

Personally I would avoid: AvP, AvP:2, The Thirteenth Floor, Ghosts of Mars.

OOOOooooo.........................I might be some time.

To the OP if you like zombies and scifi try the Omega Man and then I am Legend, seriously disturbing, but very good films.

And an interesting comparison, given that they're both based on the same book.

Agree with 'Big Chris' those are all some of the best!
Avoid wasting your life watching the alien vs predator films especially the latest one, what a way to kill the films off once and for all. And ghosts of mars...don't get me started. arghh

I agree, an amazing film! As is Tarkovsky's Solaris.

These are films for anyone who wants something more than whizz-bang special effects, and the general cliches of science fiction. They will also force you to think!

I'd also recommend Godard's Alphaville and Truffaut's Farenheit 451.

I was disappointed by "I am Legend". The first half of the film was very good. However, having read the book recently, I was peeved that they chickened out of exploring its true ending in favour of a typical "Hollywoodised" happy(-ish) ending. It was also irritating that they settled on CGI for the vampires, when 30 Days of Night and the 28 Days films have shown that you can do scary and fast monsters without it.

Another Will Smith film that starts well and then has a poor second half is.........................

Well besides the bespoke classics such as BladeRunner and The Man Who Fell To Earth, may I lighten the mood and suggest "Morons From Outer Space" (They came, They saw, They did a little shopping!) with Griff Rhys Jones, Mel Smith and Jimmy Nail? I only have it on good ol' LaserDisc but it's still brilliant.

Another classic is the Tim Allen vehicle "Galaxy Quest", with Sigorny Weaver, still cracks me up.
There's always the painfully funny "Coneheads" if you're really feeling silly.
Perhaps looking dated now, but "VideoDrome" with James Woods and Deb Harry is sorta sci-fi I guess.

I thought "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" was a little weak compared to the book, but still quite a hoot.
Then "Mystery Science Theatre 3000" would also qualify if you could track it down. The concept of the MST series was simply but brilliant, a group of misfit aliens watching classic B&W scifi films and making hilarious comments a la Beavis and Buthead.
You will either love it or hate it but I think it's scream funny.

Honourable mentions go to "Howard The Duck" from George Lucas (another LaserDisc), "Mars Attacks!" by Tim Burton is another great waste of time, as is the "Idiocracy" by the guys who are behind South Park.

Shortest and funniest scifi romp has to be Steve Oderkirk's brilliant "ThumbWars (The Phantom Cuticle)".
There's a whole series of his twisted, genius parodies in my collection including GodThumb, FrankenThumb, ThumbTanic, BatThumb, BlairThumb Project, etc.
I won't spoil the big reveal at the end of ThumbWars, but when Darth Vader rips off his cape to reveal a pink ballerina outfit and coming out as Luke's mother, then you know it's going to get silly.
Princess Lea has sticky buns on the side of her head, for crying out loud!
I'd just got out of hospital and someone got me the discs from the US to cheer me up and I swear I almost burst my stitches laughing so much. I had to watch them a bit at a time as it hurt so bad.

But for down right serious scariness, solid believable storylines without over the top laser battles, CGI overindulgence or questionable rubber monsters, it's gotta be "Bladerunner" (5 disc Blu Ray edition) and "The Man Who Fell To Earth" with Bowie (Criterion DVD import pressing).

HiDef greets also go out to "Matrix" not forgetting "Fifth Element" and "Brazil".

SciFi fans who enjoy a touch of humourous splatter fare can do no better than "Shaun Of The Dead".

Robocop, Starship Troopers, Blade, The Abyss, Terminator 1 and 2, X-Men 2 are a few which i can think of, off the top of my head.

You could always try something like Donnie Darko or Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.

I have a soft spot for Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow even though most people think it's pants
