Subwoofer help please!

Hey.

I want to run a small subwoofer on my Yamaha M170 Micro Hi-Fi. Before I buy one, I've tried connecting my Sony home-cinema subwoofer (SS-WS300) - but it won't work. The Yamaha has a subwoofer-out phono connection and the Sony subwoofer has a left and right bare-wire connections. I've tried a couple of different cable types without success.

What cable do I need, or why doesn't this setup work?

I suspect your Yamaha has a line out connection designed to be connected to an active (powered with an amp bult in) subwoofer and the Sony subwoofer you mention is passive (not powered with no built in amp).

i'm sure its a passive sub, so basically you wire from the speaker terminals on your micro system to the terminals on the sub, then from the sub to your speakers
