I have laboriously been putting my cds(FLACS) onto my NAS storage (Buffalo linkstation live) with the hope to be able to stream music from it with the pc off. The forum says it can be done but the instructions look ticky.

Has anyone any views on comparative sound quality between the classic or the duet. I intend to connect wirelessly to the squeezebox and run it through my Cyrus DacX into Cyrus monoX ?

Has anyone on this forum tried loading the slimserver software onto a linkstation ?

Cheers

It may have been easier to order a NAS with Slimserver pre-loaded.

I think you may be right having seen the instructions - I am not a linux expert.

Unfortunately i bought the NAS witha view to streaming to my PS3 but I have failed for 6 months in trying to get the PS3 to see the NAS at all.

Thanks for the advice. What are the advantages of the ipod touch interface - is it just that you get an ipod touch to use as you like ?

Is it a good interface for the squeeze box ?

i have the classic SB3 and was looking at the Duet controller but there seem to be many problems with it.

i was also looking at some form of portable music player and my phone was a few years old. But i then heard about using an iTouch/phone as a controller. had a read up on iPeng and them bought an iPhone.

works great.

I've been considering the Duet but comments on Amazon give it mixed feedback.

Anyone got one and can comment?

I have a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo (it came pre-installed with SqueezeCenter) and a Squeezebox Duet that I feed in to my Cyrus DAC-X (CDs ripped using db PowerAmp and FLAC codec). I've had no problems with the squeezebox or the NAS and I'm really pleased with both. I've tried convincing my self that my Cyrus XT-SE sounds better, but to be honest I can hear no difference between them, which makes the Squeezebox quite a bargain in my view!

There's an active squeezebox forum at http://forums.slimdevices.com/ if you've got any questions about it.

Rob.

Apart from the obvious controller/display differences,

Is there any functional difference between the squeezebox3 and duet... anything you can do on one but not the other?

Does the duet controller and ipeng ipod controller work for both?

Thanks

I had it in my head that the DAC's are different; A cursory look at Wikipedia (not to be relied upon without further investigation!) suggests that the SB3 has a Burr Brown DAC and the newer receiver unit (SBR) has a Wolfson. Same article claims that Total harmonic distortion on the SB3 is less than -93.5dB (0.002%) and on the SBR is less than -88dB (0.004%).

Of course, this is all irrelevant if you plan on using an offboard DAC although two features of the SB3 that may be useful are a headphone output and the fact that you can use the infra red remote if your ipod touch goes missing / faulty / whatever. I presume you could also control it with a programmable remote like a Logitech harmony if you had one.

The info on the DACs is correct. I have a couple of SB3s and control mine using my Harmony One and Ipod Touch. The Duet doesn't have IR but can be used as another player or mobile device.
