Generally, as Cno explained above, with the studio monitor type being the more analytical. However, there are many flavours of each, so you really need to either come to your own view by listening, or be more specific about your needs. These days the two types have come closer in some cases because powered speakers ( with built in amplifiers) are popular for computer stored music playback.
