Equipment

Cyrus aCa7.5 preamp + PSX-R Power Supply

Cyrus Q Power 50w RMS for treble

Cyrus Q Power 50w RMS for bass

Current Speakers are (BiAmped) Ruark Icon

My problem is at the moment the upper mids are too much and the bass response is a little weak.

I need some speakers that are:-

1. biwireable,

2. will suit being biamped with the Q powers,

3. are standmount,

4. will be ok to be situated nearish to a rear wall (25cm or closer)

My budget is £1000 absolute maximum and this would be for a used set of speakers originally retailing at £1500+

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Tested out some B&W 805's this week, and they do require a bit of room behind them, but sounded really good withthe cyrus kit I have.

Was going to look at Wilson Benesch Square 1's as well.

Already have Spendor s3e's and they sound lovely with the cyrus, so I expect that the SA1's would be an even bigger step up. They are sealled cabinates, just like the ATC.

Your in a good price point to go looking and have a haggle.

My totem arros sound nice run from my III and power biamped.

They are pretty compact. Melodic, Good sound stage. Punchy deep bass. Admirable for such a little speaker.

Sounding pretty good with El Goodo.

the atc scm19s could be had 2nd hand with your budget. they would definitely fit your positioning requirements.

Hi RichardPrestidge

The Icon's are still good speakers so i would suggest that you hold on to them or the time being. In the first instance i will suggest that you consider changing the pre amp as imo this the area where (at the moment with your existing components) the greatest gains are likey to be made. The last thing i feel that you want to avoid is changing speakers to tonally compensate for your pre amp as this may lead to further compromise(s).

If you are happy to buy used equipment than the NAD C160 or Rotel's RC995 pre amps will do the trick nicely. Their low impedence and high current output stages will grip the Cyrus power amps far more effectively. This should result in banashing of the almost flat but weak presentation which i feel you are currently experiencing and instead you will have a more detailed, balanced and more importantly a potent presentation across the range.

Once the pre amp area has been looked at than consider changing the speakers. If your budget allows and you still feel the need to change the speakers now than ATC's SCM11 or SCM19's are the ones to consider. They are a closed box design and importantly are flat and honest which will further help with room positioning (without the LF in particular getting itself into a twist).

Btw, what source component(s) are you using?

Thanks

i agree with the posters above - what you are highlighting as the weak points are really part of the way Cyrus presents itself.

i would reconsider whether Cyrus is the best amplifier for you rather than look at the speakers.

however if you really only wish to change speakers then i would look at the PMC which will add some extra bass via their transmission line approach.
