Speaker Wire Dilemma

I have a seccond hand technics su-vz220 amp and mordaunt-short ms20 speakers, very aged kit, picked the speakers up for a tenner with wires and was happy but I've broken ones end, all it needs is cutting down and soldering but dont have a soldering iron, so was wondering if anyone could suggest different (better) wires or am i best of repairing my aged wires.

Why do you need to solder it?
Can't you just twist the ends before fixing them into the terminals?
