Speaker Isolation Platforms??

Hi guys,

The carpet and underlay in my lounge is quite thick and the spikes on my speakers struggle to reach the concrete floor beneath to create a stable footing. As a 'teminal tweaker' I have been thinking of investing in some of these platforms for my front three and sub, if people think they add significantly to sound quality.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations of speaker isolation platforms?

What are the likely benefits and are there any potential pitfalls?

A cheap solution would be a trip down to Wilkinsons for some of their granite chopping boards (under a tenner each). Try either blutak under your speakers (without spikes) or spikes directly onto the chopping boards or onto coins with an indent created by hole punch (and probably secured to board with blutak). There is a recent thread on the subject.

Thanks for the suggestions ESP2009, do you know how thick these are?

Have you used these yourself? If so, what was the effect on you speakers sound?

They measure 40cm x 30cm x 1cm (approx) and are heavy beasts. You can get them for a few squid extra from Tesco and the like.

I have to admit that I messed around with them but they did not suit my setup. This is probably because I have stand-mounts and there is no advantage (that I perceived) to placing stands onto these boards since IMO the stands are already doing the job. However, with floor-standing speakers it might be very different. If and when I get around to buying some floorstanders - hopefully before the end of the year - I will be trying them on chopping boards at some point.

In the meantime, I hope someone with real experience of such things will be responding soon.
