I am looking to buy sound for playing the ps3 in my bedroom which is 3 x 3.5 metres. I currently have some Creative 7.1 speakers which I bought for around £100.00 four years ago – they have been fairly good but now I just fancy something new and better. My question is that for just simply a bedroom is it worth paying a lot of money for a 5.1 surround sound system that will be used at fairly low volume for most of the time - is there a notable difference in terms of sound quality to what I already have? Would stereo be more appropriate? I am willing to spend up to £600. Thanks.

I'd look at a style speaker package. They are discreet and offer good sound and take up minimum space. There are plenty out there within your budget. I'd suggest you flick through the pages of this very magazine a pick some to consider

For PS3 use in the bedroom, something like the sony DAV-IS10 would be a decent option. it can be had for £320 delivered now and should be more than capable of filling your room.

After going to my local sound and vision shops, I was recommended the following speaker systems:

BOSE 3.2.1 DVD Home Entertainment System = £650.00

Sony STRDG 910 and Tannoy SFX 5.1 = £467.00

Harmon Kardon HS200 Home Theatre System = £550.00

Sony DAVIS10 = £350.00 (although richer sounds said this was awful!!)

Two shops said that for my budget a 2.1 system would have a better sound quality then if I bought a 5.1 system considering the size of my room. What are your opinions? Has anyone purchased any of these products? What would you recommend? Thanks.

I used to play PS3 through a one box Sony Bravia 5.1 speaker setup; the sound quality was poor, although the surround effect worked quite well while connected with an optical cable. I have recently tried something different: a stereo system, and it works very well indeed. You get much improved sound quality and integration, and you still experience a sense of position of objects you see on screen, although this is only from in front of you. Playing first person shooters it is easy to discern the position of other players out of view if your speakers are a good distance apart and you are sat relatively close. I made the decision to go stereo after rearranging my room so there was no longer a perfect arrangement for a 5.1 system, and since this room is now a study as well, I valued music sound quality more than that of games. However, you get used to it. My friend has an LG home cinema in a box which cost £350, and we both prefer the sound quality of my NAD/Mission stereo system, especially as his system really falls apart for music. I purchased my system comprising a NAD C320BEE (£130) and Mission M33i (£140) 2 way floorstanders for £300 including speaker cable and interconnects, and the quality is better than any home cinema in a box system I have heard.

This would be awesome if you can stretch to it though: http://www.creative-audio.co.uk/HCS_ONK505_KHT2005.php

Ive got my PS3 running through a relatively old Sony QS Home Cinema receiver and some Q Acoustics speakers. I wouldn't change it, not considering how little it cost me to put together. I would try to get a KEF home theatre kit, and a nice 5.1 amplifier.
