I used to play PS3 through a one box Sony Bravia 5.1 speaker setup; the sound quality was poor, although the surround effect worked quite well while connected with an optical cable. I have recently tried something different: a stereo system, and it works very well indeed. You get much improved sound quality and integration, and you still experience a sense of position of objects you see on screen, although this is only from in front of you. Playing first person shooters it is easy to discern the position of other players out of view if your speakers are a good distance apart and you are sat relatively close. I made the decision to go stereo after rearranging my room so there was no longer a perfect arrangement for a 5.1 system, and since this room is now a study as well, I valued music sound quality more than that of games. However, you get used to it. My friend has an LG home cinema in a box which cost £350, and we both prefer the sound quality of my NAD/Mission stereo system, especially as his system really falls apart for music. I purchased my system comprising a NAD C320BEE (£130) and Mission M33i (£140) 2 way floorstanders for £300 including speaker cable and interconnects, and the quality is better than any home cinema in a box system I have heard.
