Hi I have just purchased a Yamaha Yas 71.My question is (forgive me if I am being dumb) if I buy a dvd player that outputs 2 channel sound will the sound bar convert it to the 4.1 it says that it gives out?

Yamaha soundbars are sudo surround sound so it will output any source as surround sound.

For the best results buy a coaxial or optical cable and it will give you better sound quality and output true surround sound.
