I am about to jump into this new technology lark but am a bit green.

Am thinking about going for the Panasonic Viera TH42PX80B Plasma HD Ready Digital Television which seems okay and found one for less than £700 over internet. But do I need to get speakers too? Told you I was green!

While I'm on what would anyone recommend for a DVD recorder?

Help!

It does have speakers built in. Some people are not impressed by the sound quality from the inbuilt speakers, however I find that the speakers on the 37" model are more than good enough for normal everyday listening. I would imagine that the 42" are the same.

Yep, I find the speakers on the px42 every bit as fine for normal viewing.

I also believe that for everyday use the sound on the pana 42px70 is more than adequate, re dvd recorder take a look at Panasonic's own or Sony, you wont be dissapointed.

Sorry for the " 's " Scotsgirl :)

I've got a TH42PX80B and find the onboard speakers OK for normal viewing. However, they're not that great if you want a more cinematic effect when watching a film. Long-term I plan to add a 5.1 surround sound system, but in the meantime I've hooked up a pair of £50 Creative GigaWorks T20 PC-type speakers and they give a significant improvement.

I'd agree with what everyone else said - the '80B does have speakers, they're OK for TV viewing but not great for movies, and down the line, adding some form of external speaker system would be worthwhile, whether it's a sound bar, a home cinema in a box or dedicated separates.
However, I think the second part of your query, about DVD recorders, has been overlooked so far. So here goes: my advice is to buy a Panasonic. That's not just because they're good recorders in their own right (and they are): it's also because Panasonic's Viera TVs now offer a system called Viera Link. This is part of the CEC standard (it stands for Consumer Electronics Control) which is written into later versions of the HDMI specification. Many manufacturers have adopted the standard (giving it their own particular brand name) and in theory, CEC should work across makes, but that's the theory.
Anyway: Viera Link greatly simplifies life. It means one remote can operate both components, and it allows your DVD recorder to 'talk' to your TV, and vice-versa. Sounds simple, but once you've lived with it, you won't want to go back.
Which Panasonic recorder to buy? Sadly, we've yet to take a look at the company's new range. However, I'd always choose a hard-disk-enabled model where possible, because it makes recording so much more convenient, so the DMR-EX78, with its 250GB hard-disk, should interest you. It looks like a straight replacement for (and improvement on) the five-star-rated DMR-EX77. To be on the safe side, I'd suggest you wait for our review, but if you really must get it sorted now, this is the model I'd look at.

Onboard sound is good for general TV but you might want to get something better for movie watching.

Ok just taking the 'p'. Hee hee.

Seriously though I am curious as to the remarks that the sound is fine for 'normal' viewing but not for movies?

What does this actually mean? I watch a lot of 'normal' Tv but also a couple of films a week so will that be a problem or do you mean boys' action movies?

Surely a well known brand like Panasonic would put decent speakers in their TVs?

I am just concerened that it won't be as good as the Trusurround of the LCD?

i dont think theres a TV out at the moment with good enough speakers for movies... they just cannot beat the classic speaker+amp setups...

The speakers are about as good as you will get in something so thin. However, when watching a movie, surely you want surround sound? If so then obviously the inbuilt speakers are not set up for this.

As for the original question regarding DVD-recorder, I have never owned a separate one so couldn't comment, always use a media centre to back up films.

That's great andy, ta.

Taken on board all comments re: extra speakers/cinema in a box job. Already got a 5.1 sony system but as it's nearly 8 years old maybe i am due a new one?!

I have looked at a few but am uncertain whether to go for the floor standing set up(not keen but damn they look swish!) or the smaller speaker systems that I have already got and are probably more appropriate for the size of room we have.

Anybody know much about these sort of things?

Same here kerzoid, my Sony Davs was 5 year old and had no hdmi or upscaling so like yourself felt an upgrade was in order [any excuse lol]. I went for the cheap and cheerful LG-HT902PB, and at a 3rd of the price of the Sony it replaced [a tad over £200 from Lasky's] it's proved to be every bit as good a purchase as the 42px80 - easily made region free to boot )

Thanks for that Arbk but have found it tricky to find the LG unit you mentioned. Did find a sony sytem DAV-IS10 which sounds and looks alright on 'digital direct' for £357.

Mmmm not sure whether to go for it. Is it worth the extra cash as it's all starting to mount up a bit now?!

Anybody got any thoughts?
