The best way to decide is to audition both if possible as really only you can decide which looks best. After buying a lcd myself this year i was really dissappointed with sd tv and motion blur with sports also a lot brighter and unnatural colours on my Samsung. Ive havent got it connected to sky yet its for use in my bedroom mainly for gaming and dvd which looks good. Majority of viewers prefer the plasma but the lcds are improving all the time and Sony seems to improved alot more than Samsung so i guess take a look for yourself also pannys 2 inches bigger. Imo go for a Panasonic plasma quite a few models to choose from Pioneer if you can afford it.

I have the 42PZ85 and it's a very good tv. Good with SD, very good with upscaled dvd's through the PS3 and absolutely stunning in HD. Games look amazing, and the very fast response time really makes a difference with fast action games. Really smooth with fast panning shots or football for example, very natural colour reproduction and even the sound is very good by flatscreen standards. The BBE VIVA 3D fake surround works really well and sounds as good as normal stereo but with added surround soundiness. Very good remote and it comes with a swivel stand which is really handy. Also the picture looks almost 3d even with SD content. Just wait until you watch a blu-ray in 1080p, big big wow factor.

Negative points are the onboard digi tuner looks a little bit softer than SKY, although not by very much. And it does take a bit of tweaking to look it's best, the factory default settings are miles off. 10 mins with the THX optimiser works wonders. And the "IFC" feature can make fast action like football on sky look very weird, the ball will suddenly disapear and then reapear further up the pitch. Turn it off in the tv menu and it's perfect. (It's turned on by default on all the tv modes btw)

I havn't seen the new Sony's so I am not sure how they compare. I love my plasma though.

Best option is to view both tv's and see what you prefer, make sure to view SD content as well.

I worked at the sony store for ages and had a px77 at home. (And we got a pretty naff discount at sony)

Needless to say the Panny destroys the Sony.

I have an older version of the Panny the TH42PX I think, and it walks all over a similarly priced Samsung I saw, which was to be fair, very very poor the power of 10. The panny isn't perfect, if you're close up on SD there is a bit of blur and sometimes pixellation. Having said that, it only happens while watching freeview, and never whilst watching DVDs.

The Samsung I spent a week with showed films and other programmes in a completely different light, as if they were false. Hard to describe but honestly sh*te.

Clare Newsome:But have you seen the W4500 sets running side by side with the Pana in question, or are you referring to old models of both?
Indeed I have, and do. In fact, if you see me posting between 9 and 6 in the day I'm in the electronics dept. staring down the throats of the major 1080p sets available in N. America as I type!

Hi Claire

Prior to the release of the w4500, i had been torn between the 46 inch panny 85 and the w4000, both within my budget. I've auditioned both of them, but where the panny seemed good on colours and motion over the sony I always thought the sony's general picture was much sharper, but when it started to move fast it juddered quite badly, so here i am still no big tv

Reading the review of the W4500 sounds like it may be the answer, i know reviewing is subjective and every individual see's things differently, but if I may put you on the spot.. which would you choose 46" w4500 or the 46" panny 85?

thanks

It's an incredibly close call, and so much depends on what you watch. I'd say the Pana's tuner has the slight edge, but then if you've got Sky/Virgin etc then that may not matter to you.The Sony's definitely the pick for detail, and the new Motion Flow system seems more effective than Panasonic's IFC in terms of motion-handling.

Thanks Claire, im going to be watching SKY HD, DVD's and Blu Rays mostly, so sounds like its the Sony for me. Just need to find a shop where I can audition it now.

Cheers
