Have researched 37" TV's to death and have narrowed down to Sony KDL37EX503, Panasonic TXL37S20B or Samsung LE37C650. Might there be a massive difference in terms of picture quality (particularly SD freeview) or would each of these potentially be a good buy? Quality of sound is not an issue, and I nearly bought the Sony before reading suggestions that the 37" version of this model is not as good as the 40".

We haven't tested those specific models, so I can't give you a definitive answer I'm afraid. The Sony KDL-40EX503 won our May issue Supertest, so in theory the 37in should be good, but that's not always the case, even with models from the same range.

Thanks Andy - I suppose what I'm really wondering is would buying a TV from Sony or Panasonic or Samsung ever be a complete disaster? My wife, family, friends and colleagues at work are all very cynical in this regard - feeling that TV's from such manufacturers are all good and that there is generally a complete 'over' analysis from magazines and websites.

I think the best advice besides having the professional help by the reviews and calibrators with test labs and mesurements also have some degree of individual/team subjective in the review process so you should finally be able to use your eyes and see for your self..

This means - the reviews are in fact very important and should be your pointing start to make a safe buy , imagine your constructing a building then its your first step - the infrastructures ( i trying to say the base )

Then when you have enough base safe to work with -- advice you to start from 4 star rating sets - then you should see it in action and trust your eyes and instincts and make your own review and buy without any problem.....

hope i helped you

I don't think a purchase from any of those brands (or Sharp, Philips, Toshiba, LG) could be seen as a 'complete disaster', but with such choice out there it makes sense to use as much information and as many opportunities for demonstration as possible in making an informed decision.

Personally my advice to any prospective TV purchaser is to decide what features you need/want and how much you want to spend as a way of streamlining the options, and then choose the picture that looks best to YOUR eyes.

Personally I sort of think this way too. I think TVs (from respected brands) are at a level now where I think you would struggle to find one that produced a bad image once set up correctly. Sure if you are carrying out comparison tests side-by-side you would notice why one set may be better than another but once it is on its own in your house then I think most would provide a very good image.
