I am considering upgrading my TV from Toshiba 52ZF355 to Sony KDL-55EX725. I like the TV but I could not compare much. I am lost in the jargon now. It says that the TV has Motionflow 200 but only 100HZ and not 200HZ. The salesrep could not give me any satisfactory answers.

My question is Motionflow 200 on a 100HZ TV equal to Motionflow 200Hz on Sony KDL 52Z5800 (which has a 200Hz) too?

Please help!

Hi wishtree, things have changed for sony's new line up for tv's this year.We now use motionflow xr,so motionflow xr200 is 100hz,xr400 is 200hz and xr800 is 400hz.hope this helps.more info can be found here.http://www.sony.co.uk/search/nsearch.action?site=odw_en_GB

Just sounds to me to be the latest jargon to try and sell more tvs by baffling the consumer

Cheers for clarifying though

Not that im aware of rik, sony are using new tech,so we don't have bravia engine any more,we now use X-reality so motion flow xr works better then it did with bravia engine, also 40" tv's from the new range now use 12bit panels.so it all works hand in hand.

Wishtree posted this thread purely because he was confused.

I admit I had no clue without going looking for the info

Sony are forever bringing out new model numbers etc (not just sony mind, many others manufactureres play the 'lets confuse the public' game)

Intentional or not, its really confusing to the consumers (And we're people who are more 'up' on this type of thing than the average person in the street)

That is right. It is Motionflow and there is 200 in it too so it was really tough to really understand that MotionflowXR200 is for a 100HZ TV where as Motionflow200 is for a 200Hz TV. That is really trying to confuse, especially when they have already set the precedence in the previous year model.

I guess this is like Computer Market, the newer TV might be cheaper and better than the previous version.. Atleast, I wish so!

As I said that the challenge is a 52" previous year 200Hz TV is costing the same as this year 55" this year 100Hz TV. They say the new TV has better processor but I do not know whether it is as good as the 200Hz TV. I really need to find a shop which sells both!!

From what i've seen in store on 2d content there wan't much between them but the actual 200Hz did look smoother, 3d made a huge difference, further separating the 2. Set viewed was the 40hx803 and 40ex723

The thing with 100hz 200hz and 400hz (oh dear) etc is its all the same rubbish (ie Motion interpolation of some degree) meaning that its taking a 50hz 60hz or 24hz source and making up "fake" images to smooth things out.

As a result the image looks sped up always has motion artifacts and in general is much worse with it on than off.

At the end of the day the best thing to do is disable it, meaning a much lower input lag ( ie better for gamers ) much crisper picture with no artificial rubbish certainly don't pay any extra for it!

I would agree with boxrick. obviously it's subjective, but enabling motionflow does tend to bring in motion artefacts. Demo the TV with motionflow on & off, & also compare 100Hz vs 200Hz side by side in a Sony shop standing at a distance equivalent to your viewing distance. See what you like.

Partially agreed, but if they interpolated correctly, it 'should' make for a smoother and more natural appearance. Theyll get it right one day.

Its a bit like the early upscalers - they looked awful at first. Now the main manufacturers have nailed it (or certainly far better than the early efforts)

Personally, id much rather a new industry standard came in. At LEAST 100Hz Progressive for all material (Obviously theres problems with this standard, but its do-able in the future)

We have compared the Toshiba 100Hz (my TV) to Sony 200Hz (friends TV) with the same Mac Mini feeding the same movie file (Matrix) and it is a huge difference between the two.

However my TV is almost three year old technology and the Sony KDL 52Z5800 is stil last year model. The Sony videos are clear sharp and the motioflow is implemented really well and in contrast the native with out 100Hz mode of Toshiba feels ancient and jerky. even with 100Hz on Toshiba, it feels as if some frames are lost.

Since the Sony I am interested (Sony 55EX725) is in Store, it becomes a challenge to hook up the Mac Mini to it. Looks like I will just take a Bluray Disc of The Matrix movie and check it out. I hope all Bluray players perform the same with movies / framerate!

Take into consideration that interpolation of frames (sonys motionflow as an example), can only be truly checked out of a period of time

My tv was praised for how smooth it is, and yet ther are clear motionflow issues under certain circumstances. So much so I generally have it switched off

The biggest issue I have with my tv is pixel response time. I wouldnt have bought it had I known how much of an issue it is

Well i own a sony kdl-40hx803 and im very happy with the picture,I tend to find that lcd with led backlighting provides a very crip picture.Motionflow tends to work well with sd content(freeview, dvd) but each to there own.I have set the picture up myself(to my liking),i watched pirates of the caribbean:dead man's chest last night on bbc1 hd and it looked amazing.Currently watching lethal weapon 3 on blu-ray(new remastered box set).Looking very good(and sounds great too.

Hi Sonycentre - Is it safe to assume that a 200Hz Motionflow 200 is better than 100 Hz Motionflow XR200 at more than 52" tv screen size or do they have almost same performance when it comes to smoothness of video for SD content?

Plasma in not in cosideration, unfortunately so I have to live with the repsonse time of LCD / Backlit LEDs

Yes i would say it is,the kdl40-hx803 has 200hz motion flow pro,I forgot to mention that. The replacement is the hx923 but that tv is not out for sale till july time(would have been sooner, but the recent events in japan have caused delay's).so it will be nice when i get the chance to compare the two tv's together.

Ok you can change picture setting's when the blu- ray player is not on.I'm assuming that you do not have a sony blu-ray player. If your not then you can't use the bravia sync function.you can set the picture up to each input.Have a play around with the setting's to see what work's best for you.Hope this helps. And yes im all good thanks.

I'm glad your impressed with it, i found it very dissapointing & hardly any improvement over my DVD versions of it.

In fact, i found it so bad i sold my BD copies of them as they weren't the full Directors Cuts( unless you go into the extras ). Strangely they were the Theatrical Cut versions, i suppose on the up side LW2 & 4 is now uncut.

Sorry but to me there was almost no difference with the Blu-ray over the DVD upscaled versions, other than a slightly softer look & yes my tv has been properly callibrated.

The audio is better, but all of this added together was not enough for me to keep the discs, sold them off on fleabay & put it down to a bad experience as i did with the Total Recall conversion.
