Hey,

I am in the market for a new tv and have set my sights on a 40'' Sony. However i am in limbo over buying either the 40W4000 or the 40W4500??????

I understand that the main difference is that the W4000 is 50Hz and the W4500 is 100Hz. Being a lover of watching sport on TV would the 4500 be better or should i save £££ and go for the 4000? Is there a massive difference in the two apart from the price?

Please help!

Presumably you've considered 'other' options as you say you love to watch sport?

We feel both are great sets at their respective prices, but the W4500 is big step up in quality - not just for motion-handling, but black depth and detail, too. If you can't stretch to the W4500 and still want to buy a Sony at this size, why not consider the V4000. We consider it excellent value - almost as good as the W4000 for less money.

Still, if it's sport you're a fan of, i'd still consider stretching for the W4500 - the extra investment will be repaid in terms of added enjoyment! Just make sure you buy from a retailer who'll give you a no-quibble exchange or refund should you encounter any unacceptable picture performance (clouding, bleeding etc) once your Sony's set up - some people have unfortunately had this happen, though we've yet to see a calibrated set that has this issue.

And i'm sure that any second there'll be someone along to tell you to buy a 42in Panasonic plasma instead - and indeed you should consider these sets, too, as great-quality plasmas (which the Panasonics are) are superb for sport.

If you are at all concerned about the clouding etc. look for a retailer who is prepared to unbox and demonstrate, in dull lighting conditions, the ACTUAL set you will be getting so that you can inspect it yourself. We did it for a customer who had been reading these forums the other day and it gave him the piece of mind to feel comfortable about purchasing what is a superb television.
