Hi there,

After having looked around for a tv for the last few months i finally decided on the Sony KDL40W4000 as all the reviews seem to rave on about it. Then today after visiting Richer Sounds they show me the Samsung LE40A686 which i later discover is the same as the 656 model but differ only in the visual appearance of the surround. They tell me that this tv is the dogs gonads with it being 100Hz, 50000:1 etc etc and that they themselves were really impressed by it. I must admit watching the blue ray film they had on at the time it did look class.

So, after having made up my mind initially i am back to another decision. Can anyone help me on my choice?

What does the SD on freeview look like on both models?

to be honest it sounds like you didnt get a look at the freeview picture on both of these sets, any TV will look great on a HD source such as Blu-Ray.

But i could say the sony looks better on freeview whereas the next person may say the samsung... its all personal preference so be sure to check out both on the same channel on the TVs freeview too/

However id say in my eyes the sonys picture quality is slightly sharper than the samsung... however i much prefer the samsung's design 🙂

hope this helps

I too was stuck between these two TVs, but opted for the Samsung. Very happy with it. I personally don't use the 100hz mode and leave it turned off as the standard motion handling for me is absolutely fine for movies, PS3 etc.

Can't comment on freeview per se but have had Virgin's cable TV until recently but changed to Sky HD - Virgin is slightly sharper than Sky channel-for-channel but they're both handled fine so long as you don't sit a metre away from the screen (as with all big tellies). Also depends on the compression of the source, e.g. ITV has always been a bit pixelated at times. Needless to say HD stuff is lurvely.

For me the Samsung looks better than the Sony, but I don't recall there being anything discernable in it picture-quality wise. Only way to call it is price I suppose...?
