As promised here are my settings after a long and boring viewing experince of the DVE Pal Bluray calibration tool.. :)

After an hour or so of playing with all the patterns i set the TV as they explained and the picture does look very good still - so it is very difficult to fine tune i have to say...

The results surprised me after reading about high contrast and lower brightness on TV sets.. but here are my results and feedback form the results would be welcomed...

All enhancing settings have been turned off -

Brightness level 65

Contrast level 67

Colour 50

Sharpness min.

Backlight min

and thats it really - i plugged the player in all the 3 HDMI inputs as each have their own memory in order to set it up properly for all - then i really looked at teh picture and detail as prior the calibration i set my settings as 85 contrast and 47 brightness and 55 colour.

The difference is that both settings look great - and i have to say it is the most difficult TV to fine tune, not because of how the set up menu is, because the TV has such a great picture regardless of the fine tuning that both look awesome.

Should others have the same model - more settings woudl be appreciated just to comapre different tastes or if anyone else manged to use the DVE HD Basics dvd.

Ben.

Hi guys, I have the 40W4000 and the settings I have for this model are Contrast 79, Brightness 50, Colour 53, and setting of Warm 1. I have to agree the picture is pretty stunning and bluray movies are outstanding.

Hi guys,

Thanks for that, I've just bought one of these so I've found it really useful.

I used DVE and got very similar results to XSnPX except my contrast was much higher, sharpness was at 2-3 (any lower and it softens the picture on mine) and I didn't adjust the backlight.

XSnPX- which enhanced settings did you turn off exactly?

Also I noticed the other day (whilst watching Sky SD) that blacks appeared really blocky. Say a close up of someone in a black suit and the suit would be made up of black and grey blocks about 1cm square. No detail at all. And that's about 3m away from the screen.

Has anyone else had this, or is it my setup?

Saying that, it does seem to have cleared up since the decent cables have arrived, but that could just be because I haven't watched anything that would show it up. Have to wait and see I suppose.

Until then I was really happy with it. I hired Raiders of the lost Ark on DVD hoping to get the THX Optimiser (it doesn't have it before anyone rushes out) and started watching it anyway.

I was really impressed with the picture and it was only afterwards that I realised that there was no upscaling going on. I'd assumed either the BD player or the amp was doing it but they were both turned off. Just a really nice picture.

Hi there,

Sorry for the delayed reply but i was away...

All enhanced features are off - i use no motionflow and all the others - i went through all the menus and turned them all off or to min.

I can get a list if you want when i get home.

Regarding the blockyness - i am yet to see a bad picture on it - all shows so far form V+ have been a joy to watch.. the only disapointment is the music channels and music on demand whenre the picture quality is aweful but this is due to the broadcast i believe.

You dont use motionflow you say, is there any particular reason for this.? Im trying to decide between the w4000 and w4500 and the motionflow is one of the main differences between them. I also have a virgin v+ box the picture is good then with your sony thats good to hear.

I was wondering that myself. Is the Motionflow not one of the main reasons for getting the 4500 over 4000? And by turning it off, are you not turning off 100hz altogether? I could very well be wrong in that assumption, but I find it looks good switched on (but not at High with film mode set to Auto 1 - that looks quite unnatural).

I look forward to trying out your other settings tonight though Ben. Cheers for that.

Hi, i have not got this tv yet but i have read that most people think motionflow standard and film mode auto 2 is the best, is this what you use.? I think that the 100hz part is always on but i could be wrong, maybe clare or someone else could clarify this at some point.

I've ordered a KDL40W4500 and wonder if it's really worth using the enhancements?

I switched off all enhancements on my 26" Panasonic tx-26lxd52 and used a THX optimiser. I was very happy with the results but they turned out to be very near the Cinema preset lol.

It almost seems a shame not too use some on the w4500 considering the cost. The promo material on the Sony website sounds promising with gizmos like x.v. colour etc.

They say the Cinema preset tends to be the closest preset to the industry standard. But they say people can find this dull and prefer something more vivd or colourful. I wonder if enhancements were aimed at making a more vivid, colourful (Perhaps unrealistic?) picture.

rob_981:Yeah, I usually use standard and auto 2, but sometimes I try it with auto 1 to see which I prefer. Are you getting this tv? You'll love it if you do.Yep ordering at the end of the month. You just have to set a target sometimes and stick to it, and go for one of them im almost certain im going for the w4500.

Hi there,

its great to read different opinions here :)

Regarding the motionflow and the 100Hz, i believe the 100Hz is always on when needed - i found th eTV very difficult to tune due to its great picture.. i watch more V+ material than any other so most teh settings were done for my V+ box and found that IMO that turning things to off or min the picture was more natural - i will play with the motionflow settings again tonight - as now i am getting use to the 40" (quickly) i may see more details on it now as upgrading form a 26 to 40 made a huge difference even to the point i was stunned by the size, but no regrets at all for buying 40".

I still love the TV - yesterday i am in catch up mode of Heroes Series 1 - and the bluray player really puts so much life on the TV i really love it to bits!! Even the sound through my speakers and old amp sound new and full of life and i may be ok till next year for a new 5.1 or 7.1 sys..

Will post more tonight or tomorrow..

Ben.

Your ITV broadcast is awful? Which match are you watching? I'm watching Man U Celtic, and I am actually really impressed with the quality of the broadcast (well, I'm assuming it's the broadcast - maybe the TV is just improving the picture THAT much!!!). Haven't checked out ITV4 yet.

So happy atm, just got the 4500 and the blu ray player from sony today. One quick question, is the THX optimiser thing any good for this sort of tv. The THX will be from a dvd tho not a blu ray. O and where on the indiana jones discs or star wars is it?

Yeah it's worthwhile running through for all tv's and it makes no odds whether it's from a DVD or blu-ray. On Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark (and I guess all other discs) you'll find the THX option under 'SET UP' then click the 'THX Optimizer' logo.

I'll see if anyone on the test team can check the exact settings - but they will of course need to be tweaked to suit your preferences. I do know we will have used THX Optimisation for starters, and that MotionFlow was set to standard (as mentioned in the review).

Thanks Ben, and I must apologise for the slow reply as I've been away too.

I found that if I reset everything back to default, but knocked the sharpness down to 2/3 then the 'blocky black' (for want of a technical term) has pretty much cleared up (not completely though). Although it could just be the broadcast at the time.

Thanks for the posting the settings though, I'll give them a try tonight.

Cheers,

Steve.

My 40" W4500 arrived yesterday afternoon from electrosaver. After the negative comments I've seen about them I wasn't sure it would turn up.

I don't have a BD player or a game console but SD looks fantastic to me, and dvd's look even better. It's an easy set to use and I'm hoping to get the Bravia sync working once I get an optical lead.

The only this that does bug me is there is an audible hum coming from the back of the set. Is this normal?

Is doesn't seem like a fault, I know TVs have a low level of this behind them. This morning while changing channels the hum changed to a lower tone and went away. But now it seems to be there all the time.

It's not loud enough to spoil watching a programme, but once you know it's there you can hear it when the TVs at low volume.

Does anyone know of a remedy?

I've been through the settings with no joy. Hoping it will go away it time.

It's definitely a buzz I can hear coming from the top of the TV. I tried a search and found mention of raising the backlight to max. This worked but not for long.

When I put my hand on top of the set the noise disappears, and comes back as soon as I lift my hand. If I press firmly it disappears, but I've noticed it come back a couple of times since!

This isn't the right topic for these problems (you better post it in the ''Many problems W4500'' thread).

Yes, my 46W4500 has also buzzing that comes from the back. When I use the HDMI--DVI connection trough my pc and open a file with a lot of text or lines, the buzzing gets more. It's annoying when the volume is set to MIN. I Think that this is not a fault. It's normal.
