The Sony KDL 40W2000 comes out as an amazing television, particularly with HD sources, but as I will be watching a majority of SD programmes, I am anxious to know how well this TV performs with SD sources. I keep getting varying reviews from various consumers.

I will also be sitting 3m from the TV, is this too close for a 40" TV particularly when viewing SD programmes?

I have a Virgin + Box and will be using a QED Quinex HDMI Cable and gold Scart Cables.

Your opinion would be really appreciated.

My advice would be to get a 40W3000 instead as it's meant to be better at handling SD pictures, see the review on HDTV Test website.

I heard that the D3000 was also meant to be really good, however only in the 32inch variety, and the 40D3000 isn't meant to be that good at all with SD pictures.

Best way is to go into a shop and ask them to show you i guess...

Hi there

Sitting 3m from a 40in screen will be fine. I too have a 40in Sony Bravia (albeit an earlier generation model) and sit about that distance from the screen, which is fine.

As you've got the Virgin V+ box, that will upscale SD pictures from the Virgin cable TV channels, and I find the picture quality at that distance pretty good, although of course it does depend which channel you're watching.

Some of the more obscure shopping channels don't exactly look great, but then who cares?

Our verdict on the Sony KDL-40W3000? Put simply, the best LCD TV in this price class, with a clean and noise-free image from the Freeview tuner. I'd go for the newer W3000 model over the W2000.

Does the Sky HD box do the same upscaling ?

Can you turn either off as wouldn't you want the TV to do the upscaling for you ?
