Hi …
Can anyone tell me if this box also upscales DLNA streamed videos to 1080p?
WhatHiFi, is it something you tested although not explicitly mentioned in your review?

Please let me know, as Sony are reluctant to answer the question…
Thanks

Just tried a couple of standard def videos, streaming with Serviio, when info button is pressed, it comes up as 1080/60p.

Nice, thanks!
Can we be sure that Servio is not upscaling it before it gets to the Sony?
Also, do you see that the upscaling worked in terms of improving picture quality when you did your test?

As far as I can tell its the Blu-ray player, depending on the original video most videos look good, e.g Little Sister video by Queens of the Stone Age downloaded from youtube with Anyvideo Converter as a .flv file is 480p, and looks really good.

By the way I find Serviio 1.0.1 is much better than Sony Homestream 1.1 even though that is based on Serviio.

Thanks so much for all this testing, it has really helped me!

Just one other Q.... Is Spotify one of the downloadable apps for the 790?

It's not one of the apps thats on the startup menu at the moment, but they add new ones every now and again.

THANKS

HERE IS THE OFFICIAL RESPONSE FROM SONY THAT JUST ARRIVED:

Thank you for your recent e-mail.
As I understand you are enquiring about BDP-S790 specifications, and you would like to know if it would upscale video content steamed to it over DLNA.

Kindly be informed that the player can only upscale video content from DVD Discs.
It won't upscale Video Streams.

I am sorry I cannot be of greater assistance on this occasion, however I hope that my e-mail has gone some way to clarifying this matter.
Best regards,
SONY EUROPE LIMITED

It doesn't actually matter, if the BDP won't do it the TV will, otherwise you'll just get a small picture in the middle of the screen. It won't add anything to the picture that isn't already there.
