I have been looking at tv's for a few weeks now and have narrowed it down to the two above, the sony 46we5 is £1200 and the panasonic 42" v10 is £1080.

I cant wait any longer and need to get hi-defed-up! before you say it - i cant afford the philips as much as id like to, i can get the above with the help of some finance whereas from what ive found i would need £1500 upfront for the philips!

Am i right in thinking the we5 hopefully doesnt suffer from same backlight issues as other sonys because it has a different technology for backlighting? ive seen this tv a number of times and hi def looks fantastic on it. i havent seen it with sd which concerns me as it is 46" so can whf team tell me if the sd image is grainy/noisey? as there is prob more sd tv to watch than hi-def material.

The panasonic looks better aesthetically and i think from what ive read will be better with sd? just worried about the reflections on the screen, as i have a window adjacent where tv will be and a light over!!

if anyone including whf team had to spend their money on the above which would you purchase?

Ive ruled out samsungs led's because i dont think they handle motion very well (from what ive seen)

thanks

aesthetically

I just rang up Richer sounds, and you can get the philips 9664 for now £1400 with a free 5 years warranty. Maybe it would worth a consideration with that offer in mind. For those 2 TVs you mentioned in your post, i dont have any experience with so im sorry I cant comment on them

The 9664 is £1500 or £1650 with 5 year (rounded up) on Richer Sounds website. Who told you £1400 inc' 5 year warranty? I am probably about to buy this set so please enlighten me.

We came close to getting a WE5, but (from what I have read online) there are sets with cloudy backlights.

Both Sony and Panasonic are very good TVs. One is an LCD, while the other is a plasma. I personally would prefer the plasma V10 which is THX certified and plasmas generally tend to offer more natural rendition of colours & deeper blacks. Having said that, I regard Sony as amongst the best LCD TV manufacturers, although there has been some quality issues with some TVs, which can always be replaced if your TV turns out faulty.

On a balance, I think the bigger 46" Sony is a better buy than the 42" Panasonic.

If the shop you buy from will accept a cloudy Sony as faulty - yes I would get the Sony (nearly did). However, Sony do not accept this as a fault (a little research on these threads proves that). I was worried about the shop accepting it as such, but then if (as some Sony owners have said) the cloudy problem developes over time, where are you - with Sony not interested?

If the WE5 is cloud-free it will be a wonderful TV. Anybody gone for a white one? Can't imagine one in any other room than a kitchen and not many people have a 46inch TV in the kitchen!

I rang up Richer sound in Belfast (02890321332) and the guy on the phone told me that was the offer

He told me £1399 staight off and then i questioned him about the warranty he said 5 years. I hope he wasnt telling me porkys but i dont see why he would. Il be definitely down there within the next couple of weeks to check it out. Its too great an offer for me not to investigate. I presume most Richer Sounds stores will have similar offers nationwide

John Lewis usually replaces TVs without hassle, & they price match & offer a 5 year guarantee on all TVs.

And yes, you'll get a further £100 discount for exchanging your old TV for a Sony.

But, if you're still concerned about it, then Panasonic is not a bad choice at all.

bigboss, yes ive considered buying tv through john lewis but they only do the sony tv in white and in 40" not 46" black at the moment :-(

i dont mind either tv, i was more concerned the fact at 46" it could show up picture noise more on sd broadcasts? whereas a 42" plasma could be better? although the whf review of the we5 is very positive, it might come down to a toss of a coin!!

in respect to the v10 whf dont rate it as much as the panasonic g10 but im thinking at £1080 the v10 must be good value for your buck and surley better than the g10 which is rated highly?

Some TV's cope with SD far better than others, but we have to rember that SD was not developed with 40"+ TVs in mind so generally speaking you will start to notice more picture artifacts with SD the larger the TV screen gets and dependant upon just how close you sit to the TV itself.

I have found from personal experiance that when it comes to larger displays, that a good Plasma will outproform a good LCD with SD and offer a more natural picture.

also plasmas seem to have a softer picture on sd.very much like the crt sets of old.lcd can be unforgiving with a bad signal, but in my mind lcd seems a hell of a lot sharper with hd content.Just let your eyes be the judge.

thanks for your comments.

thats really the dilemma i have, i think for general everyday viewing the plasma could be better but for hi def i have seen the sony's in action and they look striking, what you'd expect from hi def really. but you know how much hi def material is there at the moment, the odd bluray movie and a few free hd channels, even sky dont have that many.

thanks for your thoughts, i will be taking the plunge soon not sure logic will play a part!

sonycentre do u price match and are you understanding when it comes to this bleeding backlight (no pun intended) :)

It is all down to personal preferance with the whole Plasma V LCD when it comes to your purchase, but seeing as the vast majority of what you watch is still SD surely you have to go with the best all-rounder, what is the point of a TV that may be very good with BD but pants when watching the footie on ITV? For me a Plasma offers the best package over all and IMHO by some distance.
