mikey2008:
Saw one in the Sony shop today and it looked exactly like the V4000, picture was okay but aesthetically, it was a let-down.

Its an entirely different proposition to the V4000, which in itself had already been bettered by the V4500 Sony Centre Exclusive model. Yes, the design is more evolution than revolution, but the quality of finish is higher and its performance is considerably better than either the V4000 or V4500 sets.

No. Its the upgrade on the old V4000 and V4500 models. As usual with Sony, the old W spec (including the 1080p resolution) has trickled down to the new V although the new V has the improved Bravia Engine 3. The replacement for the W4000 is the W5500, which is the same as the V5500 but with the addition of 100Hz MotionFlow.

Just to clarify the new range in relation to previous models.

32"

S5500 - This is a direct replacement for the S4000 and V4000 models and is the entry level offering in the new range. HD Ready (720p/1080i). Expect launch prices to be about £599.99.

V5500 - This replaces the V4500 (which was exclusive to Sony Centres) and, in part, the V4000 (although the cheaper S5500 is more of a direct replacement for that model). This is FULL HD 1080p, features Bravia Engine 3 and the new Applicast feature. Its USB port now works with still images, music and video. Launch price is around £799.99.

W5500 - This replaces the W4000 and W4500 (which was only available in 40" upwards). It is the same spec as the V5500 but with the addition of the MotionFlow 100Hz feature. Expect launch prices to be about £899.99.

These features are consistent across sizes, with the exception that from 40" and above the S5500 sets are Full HD 1080p. All three sets are available in 37" as well - specs the same as the 32" models.

Hope this helps anyone confused by the new range.

As far as I could see from Sony website, it appears that the contrast ratios for the w5500 range are

40w5500 100,000:1

37w5500 50,000:1

32w5500 80,000:1

Struck me as odd that the 37" had a lower spec than the 32", but perhaps I'm missing something?
