I have just had a conversation with Sky regarding their new pricing.

I would love to get HD installed so that I can could take advantage of the superior picture quality for the new football season.

I rang them and firstly the wanted to charge me the older price of £249, giving me a £50 discount (rubbish given that I have been with them for over 10 years). I then said that I had seen the new offer price. The guy came back and said that they could do the new price but they would have to charge standard installation of £60. Shocking!

I asked if he could do any better, but he said no and said that the new £150 price was for a limited period only and that the cost of the standard installation also included a warranty! I was shocked and asked if i didn't want installation then I would not get a warranty to which I got no reply.

My point here is, if they are going to charge installation and we have to take it why firstly reduce the price of the box when the box also should be costed with the installation!

My question is, has anyone managed to get the new price for the box with free installation? Should I wait until the new price actually comes into play and then call them asking for free installation? Should i try an independent and see if they can do a better deal for me?

I would move to virgin but their HD content is not very good and I live in a remote area where we do not have any cable coverage.

the 60 pounds you are quibbling over is not worth it. That is a meal for two or two movies with popcorn... hardly worth this much bother inmho if you are actually interested in HD which is worth more than 60 pounds.
or try freesat

I am very disappointed with SKY's new pricing, the up-front costs are still too high considering you still pay £10/month on top.

I would have been reasonably happy to pay ~£200 for the box and install with no ongoing subscription. Even so £60 to disconnect an SD box and plug in a new one with the same cables, presumably run some auto setup routine and make one call to engineering...way too much.

To those suggesting Freesat - well, yeah...but if it's the HD football you're after, you're not going to get much beyong MOTD on BBC1.

I have had a result on the whole paying over the odds for Sky HD thing.

I was walking through my local shopping centre and thought I would have a rant at one of the Sky reps who were standing at a new stand. Basically saying that I wanted HD and thought that it cost way too much for the box and installation.

She was pretty good about the whole situation, and straight away offered me the Sky HD box for £75 instead of the £150, but said that I would still have to pay the £60 installation. I felt that this was a whole lot better than the deal offered by Sky. She also said that before I sign up with her, I should call sky and tell them I am leaving which will mean that I am put through to retentions and maybe able to get a better deal than hers.

But all in all I would be happier paying the £75 + £60 instead of the £150 + £60.

So really there are deals to be had if you are Sky customer. Let the new footie season roll on!
