Been a lot of chat about the ultimate war movie is coming from what it seems, in feb or march.

There is even a pre order thing on HMV, nothing official, but looks like from blu-ray.com and places like that, it is coming.

Even people in canada and the US are talking about it.

Erm, it was shot on film, so was always in (better than) HD anyway

There's an HD broadcast transfer of it around, for sure, but that's a different thing to a BD release - or at least should be; and knowing Spielberg's control-freakery re disc releases, sure it'll be the real deal as/when it arrives (please god with no tweakery

Think about how big a cinema screen is and how far the projector is from the screen. Do you think it's 576i?! The resolution will be far greater than 1080p. This is why the old film look better than ever on Bluray (as long as the original print has been kept).

Not everything, no - but good old 35mm film was/is inherently higher resolution than Blu-ray.

More on film and how you can achieve a fantastic BD transfer in my blog on the James Bond Blu-ray releases.

A lot of TV is now shot on HD video cameras - some films, too (such as District 9), are shot with '4K' digital cameras, which again have much higher resolution than Blu-ray/HD TV - they're downscaled to suit today's players/TVs, but ready (just like those old films are) for future, higher-resolution broadcast/streaming/disc formats.

The problems come when, instead of going back to/optimising the original, ultra-HD source, companies rush-release Blu-rays from earlier digital transfers (ones made for DVD or HDTV release)....
