For what it's worth, I used to have an iPhone 3GS (2 in fact as one lasted barely a year before it became faulty) but moved to a Galaxy S2. I have never looked back! Yes there's a difference and Android is not quite as slick as iOS but having to connect to iTunes, only having one battery, no Flash support, no HDMI output for EVERYTHING on your phone, not being able to swap memory cards...I mean, apart from the design and the quality of some apps, why would anyone choose any iPhone over an S2 or S3?
I went with Apple initially as Android was in its infancy really and the Apple marketing is soooo good. I'd still recommend an iPhone to my mum or girlfriend, but for anyone who is into technology and doesn't hold a TV remote control the wrong way round I would look at the Samsung.
I guess you pays your money though....
