My pioneer Bdplx70a is on its last legs I fear.

when new this was £1000

how much do I need to spend to get the same quality player, and what would you recommend ?

I would recommend an Oppo Blu-Ray player. They are quick at loading, well built, well packaged, have excellent customer service if you need it, plays Blu-Rays and DVDs and CDs really well. I wouldn't spend much on a replacement though £500 max. Marantz players are pretty good too. Do you need it for analogue sound? All Blu-Ray players put out very similar pictures.

Hi there, wow thats an old player. Only Pioneerss second model if I remember. Just an ethernet port added from the LX70 and only for firmware update pusposes not BD live which was a shame.

Anyway though the player was that much I'm pretty sure you can spend a bout £300 and easily match the picture quality and sound if you use the player to decode the sound. If you want to stick with Pioneer then track down the LX71 which even though was only about £600 new is a much better player than the LX70a. Still slow to turn on but a splendid picture and hase 7.1 analogue outputs on the rear.

Gel's recommendation is worth a look in though as OPPO player are top notch and is what I will likely go for when my LX71 gives up.

I hope that helps.

Be very careful replacing your lx70 with a second hand lx71 or 91 etc because firmware updates are very rare now if any.

i replaced my lx71 with a Denon 3313 and is a great transport and loads disks very quickly. It can be had from peter tyson for £449 with a 3 year warranty.

however, a £50 player will be the same in picture performance as a £500 or above player when playing Blurays because they all transmit the same signal. It's when you start adding all the picture processing settings on, is when the differences can be seen. If you have a calibrated TV, then all processing should be switched off.

if you also want to watch DVDs, then the higher up ranges of players will make a difference in picture qaulity. The oppo with darbee seems to be a good player. I only play BDs on a calibrated VT so no need to go over board for me.

Series1boy is right about the old Pioneers. I'v only had a problem with 1 Blu-Ray so far on my LX71 and i have over 1000 BDs

If you did go for an old LX71 or 91 then and discs that won't play you should be able to send it to Pioneer if they don't already have it and they will set about issuing a new firmware. They just won't be fluid with the updates anymore.

The lx70a was actually better than the 71 that replaced it so i would'nt botther getting a 71 as it will make no difference in pq and sq, the oppo is the more obvious choice, great machine just limited outlets to demo it.

othe canididates would be denon, marantz and cambridge audio

Yep, it was a little bit better strangely enough! *smile*. And that was picture quality too.

i have the Denon 3313 and is very good, but no difference in picture qaulity compared to the 71, panasonic 500. Only replaced the 71 because it gave up..
