I have a home theatre in my basement (6M by 5M), with Denon 1906 amp, Denon 1940 player , Toshiba MT400 projector, Wharfedale Diamond 8.3, SW150 sub and 9.DFS surround speakers.. The Toshiba MT400 is 1024 x 576 pixels, however it gives an excellent picture. I am mulling over changing this projector for a 1920 x 1080 machine. Can anyone give me guidance of how much improvement I will see? The current setup projects from 5.5M (back of the room) onto a 3M screen. The room is totally dark. I only watch movies on this setup. I have a large collection of DVDs, the latest movies give a crisp picture, the older movies vary from good to poor (so I would not expect to see any improvement with these via a different projector).

I am considering the Infocus X10 and IN80, Sanyo PLV-Z700, Panasonic PT-AX200E

With a full HD projector, the Denon will upscale, will this give me a noticeable improvement? Will I need to go Blue Ray to see any real benefit?

It's also worth considering the Mitsubishi HC6500 which is also in your price bracket. Along with it's bigger brother, it's the quietest home cinema projector on the market, and will give you an extremely sharp and detailed picture. It'll all depend on whether you see the rainbow effect produced by DLP projectors.

Your Denon will upscale to 1080p, but it'll be worth comparing the quality of this upscaling of the Denon to the scaling of the projector you choose, as in the case of the 6500 it uses the Silicon Optix Reon HQV chip, which it also shares with it's big brother. You'll probably find the projector will look better upscaling SD, but you may not be able to send 576i via HDMI from the Denon.
