Question Rega ND5 VS Audio Technica VM740ML Cartridge

Hey all i have narrowed down to 2 cardridges to my Rega P3 turntable within my budget the Rega ND5 And Audio Technica VM740ML . I have heard the Audio Technica and it really improved over my Elys 2 cartridge. Has anyone compared the 2 cartridges and which one do you prefer?

Rega carts are not standard depth almost as if Rega don,t want you change
740ML you will need headshell Shims or VTA risers or look at 2MR ortofon for rega

Well, hardly a proper comparison but for what is worth, I have the 540ML on my Technics SL1500C, and three weeks ago I demoed a Rega P6 with ND5 and wasn't that impressed - I didn't think it was any better than my set up. That said, the cart was likely incorrectly setup or had some issues as the left channel was audibly louder, so who knows what other issues it had - most likely not at its best.

Thanks Didn't know about the MR Ortofon. I know the Bronze and Black very well so they definetely will be in my consideration.

Hi, If I understand right, your P3 is some earlier version. But still very good. Elys 2 was very fine cartridge, same like Exact, which I have used for years. To be honest, new generation of Rega ND cartridges is in different league. Even ND3 is better than Exact. ND5 is may be best price/value option. ND7 is at least comparable with Ortofon 2M Black (or 2MR Black with lower overal body height for Rega arms). Those two carts can be compared with very good Nagaoka MP 200 or 300 mm cartridges and this is a big compliment. Audio Technika VM 740, I think is not on level of Ortofon 2M Black or new ND7 from Rega. It is not easy to choose here. They are all very very good. BR.

My P3 is the 2016 model which still is the current TT today with A tangospinner Subplatter And Rega Reference EBLT Belt and the Neo PSU. And my amp is Rega Elex-R with 2 compact speakers Dynaudio Excite X18.

ND5 will offer sufficient "step-up" for your system. diminishing returns going for the ND7.
alternative could be a RigB AT540ML combination but not sure if price comapatible.
