I have just taken delivery of my new Michel Tecnoweight and plan on fitting this to my RB300 arm tonight.

I have been trying to find details on the weight of the Elys Cartridge, but information seems to be very sparse on the ground on the Rega Website.

Does anybody know if I need to use the lighter or heavier of the two weights supplied with the Tecnoweight. I have in my mind that it would be the smaller of the two weights suitable for cartridges of 3-6gms.

Can anyone confirm that the Elys falls into this weight bracket...i dont think its over 6gms?

Cheers

Hey buddy,

i've just had a wee look about and you're right: it aint easy to get the specs, is it?

I found a thread on vinyl engine and it's the smaller weight that you need to use.

You're right, Rega always seem to be a bit vague and defo the smaller weight. Have fun Jason, I'm still adjusting my weight a week and a half in trying to find that sweet spot. :)

Cheers Guys I thought that would be the case.

Looks like I will need to change it to the larger weight when the Goldring arrives as that is 6.3gms....depends how accurate Michell are on the crossover between small and large weights I suppose.

Have fun finding out.

Stripping my deck down at the weekend as I'm not entirely happy with the setup but then the wife and kids are off up to Yorkshire so will be left well alone

Cheers Mitch, I will have fun experimenting :)

By the way does anybody know I can remove a very very stubborn arm stub from my RB300??

I have tried with bare hands and also with rubber gloves and it doesn't seem to want shift.

I dont want to try too hard because of damaging the arm :-(

Any ideas??????

I'll probably be strung for saying this but I had to put a rag around the endstub of an old rb250 and use a pair of pliers, to be fair one slight turn did the trick BUT be careful!

EDIT - i may be stating the obvious but make sure you do this with the arm off the deck.. :)

I dont think this is going to be a quick 10 minute job is it?

I take it this will involve removing my cartridge and then removing the tonearm completely including pulling the phono sockets through the hole? All this is new to me and I am wondering whether I may be better waiting till the cartridge comes and then taling it somewhere to get set up properly??

If I do remove the tonearm myself, how do I know I have put it back on correctly....i.e. angle etc?

Hi Jason

I know it's a pain but it's pretty straight forward, just unscrew the main nut and it should come straight out. As far as the deck is concerned the arm is fixed in position so should not need adjustment when putting it back on if I remember correctly. No, you don't need to take your cartridge off.

I take you want to test the weight to check the improvements (I would do the same) before the Goldring turns up.

Last time I had a P3 I bought Rega's own counterweight upgrade. (The smaller tungsten one.) They used to be standard issue on RB300s but are now reserved for Rega's more expensive arms.

I wouldn't like to do the job you have to do (for fear of bearing damage if the arm is not removed from the deck).

Google... Michell Tecnoweight Instructions ...and click the first result. (I cannot post the link here but it should be a fully photographed 'how to' article from a website specialising in all things vinyl and turntables.)

It mentions the problems with older RB300s in particular and gives advice.

Cheers Mitch,

It's not so much it being a pain...I'm just frightened of damaging something whilst I am doing it. But you are right I would like to try and get an idea of how the elys sounds with the tecnoweight before the Goldring arrives :)

Chebby,

Thanks for that as well mate....I just imagine that the end stub on the RB300 has never been removed...so just a bit tight. I looked at various weight upgrades and decided that it sounded like the Michell one was the best. I will have a look at that website thanks mate.

Know the feeling only I've had to share my wine!!

Share wine!!!!! Never, if my other half wants wine...we get two bottles. But then again she prefers white, whereas I am definately a red man :)
